I hope this is OK to share on this section. I received a recent communication from the NRA-ILA on gun control measures that have already passed the State House and are moving to the Senate. The package of bills includes universal background checks for all long-guns and handgun purchases, safe storage requirements for gun owners and so-called red flag laws allowing judges to temporarily confiscate a gun from someone posing a risk to others or themselves.

Recently, your NRA team was on hand in Lansing while committees in both chambers held public hearings for a number of anti-gun bills. Unfortunately, discriminatory practices stopped the important voices in opposition of these bills from being heard. Despite these being “public” hearings, the committee chairs manipulated the hearings in order to make it seem that public sentiment is one-sided in favor of the bills. A large crowd of Second Amendment supporters took the time out of their schedules to show up, but the House Judiciary Committee cut off testimony after hearing 2.5 hours of just gun control supporters and told anyone else wishing to testify to “come back next week.” The Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee pulled a similar stunt, only allowing two well-known opponents to testify: researcher John Lott and violent crime survivor Nikki Goeser.

Your NRA team will continue working with pro-gun lawmakers to shine a light upon these discriminatory practices, as the committees are determined to quickly rubber stamp these bills and send them on. For more information, see the article on the recent House passage of the gun bills here here: NRA-ILA | Michigan: House Passes Long Gun Registration & Permit Mandate.

Good news from my State Representative, but the House has already voted to pass the bills.

Minnesota is trying the same even though is is oppose by almost all sheriffs, except the metro counties of course . . .

Those highly populated counties are all that count in MI, WI, and MN! Being on the western MI UP/WI border, we only get Duluth network stations on Directv and see more news about WI and MN than MI.

Elections have consequences.

I'm sorry to see this. I was quite pleased with the progress the Wolverine State had made since the days of purchase permits and "safety inspections" for handguns and the firearms board for carry permits and hate to see things backslide. I no longer have any land there, but still visit relatives in the TC area. Guess I'll have to brush up on whether there is any effect on my out of state carry license. Is MUCC likely to challenge the law in court?

I left MI 8 years ago, always felt gun friendly to me. I carried 100% of the time (where legal). Sorry to hear things are changing.

In hindsight do you think the militias openly carrying rifles into the legislature, outside public officials houses, at polling stations, as well as kidnap plots might have been a mistake?

Tyrants are going to tyrannize, rifles or not.
It's all they know.

I wouldn't count on the NRA doing anything to help. Out in Oregon I don't think they spend a nickel to help us combat the gun grabber **** last fall. We have the biggest batch of **** stew going on now that nobody knows a thing.
I am a life member, but every time they call begging for more of my hard earned money, I flat out tell them NO---try some other sucker that has no clue.

The NRA-ILA already did what they could, report the pending bills to its membership for us to contact our House and Senate folks. What do you think they could do? They also contacted and lobbied the same bodies of legislature, but the numbers of pro-2nd Amendment supporters was not high enough to make a difference in a state where all three governing bodies are like minded. Passage was inevitable. Tell me of a better place to put your monetary support? Guaranteed that they will participate in any court fights.

I am sure that all the same things occurred in Oregon, but again not enough 2nd Amendment supporters there either.

The case in Oregon was an initiative on the ballot and passed by less than 2%. Had the NRA spent a few cents to possibly educate the ignorant public---print or TV spots would have probably done it, then we would not have the huge mess we have now---too much to even try to explain.

I did my best to contact neighbors and anyone I felt might be leaning towards a yes vote. Part of are pile of stuff is a safety course and a BG check to get a permit to allow a BG check. No such class exists because they made all the requirements up. Not to mention the redundancy of paying for a BG check to get a BG check from an FFL when purchasing.

I was told by several friends that actually enjoy shooting and are college educated---that they believed anyone could go take a class at a local community college. They also thought a permit to buy was a great idea and figured a BG check was just part of the deal. Just these 2 friends cost us 7 votes in the wrong direction. The 2 guys---their 2 wives---and 3 voting aged kids still living at home. Of course I have since re-educated both of them and given each a verbal beating.

I just figure had the NRA spent any money here---nope just crickets---we might have educated enough to make a 2% difference. Now the NRA is pushing their chest out and telling us they are ready to fight all of it in court battles. DOH----they are no different than the guberment in spending our dollars wisely.
