Just read that they are going to begin filming a $100M remake of "Midway" at Oahu/Pearl Harbor next month. I love the original and watch it every time it comes on (even though I own the DVD.) I hope they make a production befitting this incredible event and leave out the extraneous love stories this time around.

Hopefully they will get rid of the distracting side story about the sun and his girlfriend. It's the only part of the original I don't like.

I seldom like remakes as they tend to be loaded with revisionist nonsense. We'll see if in this version, the Battle at Midway is portrayed as a misunderstanding caused by global warming.

Probably going to be a special effects driven mess with a lousy story.

Let's hope that the producers use the book, Shattered Sword (2007) by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully, as the basis for the movie. It focuses on the Japanese side of the battle, because that's where most of the historical errors exist. It's the most accurate account of the battle that has been published to date. If you are a World War 2 buff, it's a must-read.

I wonder how they are going to portray the carriers. Because the only WWII carriers left are anachronistic in that they weren't yet built when the battle took place and all of the preserved Essex class carriers existing all have the later angled decks. As for the Japanese carriers, there is nothing existing nowadays that remotely resembles them. I guess there will be a lot of CGI and/or models. As for the story line, I really hope that they don't butcher it like that terrible Pearl Harbor movie. I'm not optimistic the remake will be decent.

There is zero chance they are going to float any original vessels. CGI is far cheaper and easier.

With Roland Emmerich directing, I seriously doubt it will be a gritty war epic. It will be an over-the-top CGI special effects flick with lots of one-liners and jokes aimed at 14 year old boys with 90ish IQs. Just look at his portfolio.

I would just rather watch the victory at sea Midway episode, I think it was one of the best of the series.

The director who made the “Lord of the Ring” series (Peter Jackson?) tried to do a re-make of The Damn Buster. He’s been trying for years with little progress. Seems it doesn’t have the production priority that fantasy movies do.

Like others, I have rarely if ever seen a remake of any movie that I liked. They just can't come up to the originals.

These remakes just demonstrate Hollywood's inability to come up with something new and original. There are plenty of events from WWII alone that have not made it to the silver screen that would be worthy of a movie. Just off the top of my head I can think of a few;

- The last patrol of the USS Tang.

- The lost sightseeing trip over New Guinea's "Shangri-La" valley in May, 1945 as depicted in the book "Lost in Shangri-La.

- The David vs Goliath naval battle of the Taffy's during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

- How about something like "Jimmy Stewart: Bomber Pilot"

- I even like, "Ambush at Bougainville: The Assassination of Yamamoto"

- I think a docudrama about the life of Jimmy Doolittle would be better than fiction.

A close friend of my dads was a veteran of the 2nd Infantry in Normandy.

When invited to see a black & white movie titled “Battle Of The Bulge”, he politely declined, saying “I’ve seen that one live and in color.”

"Tora! Tora! Tora!" was done in a semi documentary style. It was not successful financially. It's a great movie for history buffs as it's pretty accurate, especially compared to most historical movies.

For that reason, I doubt a remake will be done in that style.
