Watched the classic war film "Midway" this afternoon.
What a great movie and so representative of the greatness that the USA used to have.

I remember seeing it in the theater... "sense-a-round".. was about deaf when I left the movie... it was a moving experience.

....well done. I liked showing it from both sides.
It's funny how the Japanese were always looking to get us into 'one great battle' where, for some reason they were expected to be the victors. This came pretty close to the one great battle but it didn't go their way.

There is a very good book on Midway from the Japanese view called "Shattered Sword".
What is even more amazing is the American airplanes were outclassed by the Japanese.
The Devastator torpedo plane was obsolete and easy pickings for the Japanese.
The Wildcat fighter was outclassed but with proper tactics could take on the Japanese Zeros. The Wildcat did prove to be effective hunting German submarines and providing air cover for convoys in the Atlantic operating from small escort carriers.
The SBD Dauntless is one of my favorite naval airplanes. Slow But Deadly it was a excellent dive bomber. Aggressive pilots even managed to shoot down Zeros on occasions.
The loss of so many skilled Japanese pilots was as great as the loss of four carriers as Japan didn’t have a good training program for new pilots.

I don't know if anyone here scuba dives but if your qualified and you're a WWII history fan, you can still dive on both Japanese ships and planes!
During World War II more than 60 Japanese ships were sunk around Palau. Some of these WWII wrecks in Palau are part of the “Lost Fleet of the Rock Islands,” and that is not even counting all the WWII plane wrecks who crashed at sea during aerial combat.
While not all of these wrecks remain today, there are still a multitude of WWII wreck dive sites to choose from in Palau, many of which are considered some of the best wreck dives on the planet.

Back then the landing and take off from Carriers when the seas were heavy was almost as dangerous as the mission, especially on the small Carriers.

That sounds like a great way......

My best friend's dad, had been a PBY flight engineer, and was used as a torpedo/bomber flight engineer to fill up a land base squadron after the battle. He later had 2 PBY's shot out from around him, but preferd to ride the planes down than hit the silk! Everybody that parachuted was strafed in the air, not one of them survived!

The war was lost for Japan when Doolittle led his successful raid only four months after Pearl Harbor as it clearly demonstrated America's ability and determination to bring the war to the Emperors doorstep. The effect of his raid cannot be underestimated.
