Have been researching military service of my ancestors. My father was USMC during WWII. My grandfather was USMC during WWI. My great great grandfather was in the 37th Georgia regiment of the Army of Tennessee (Civil War). Great great grand dad was from Georgia. Moved to Texas in 1900. My father and grandfather were Texans.
I went for my induction physical in 1969, but ended up being 4F so did not serve. Initially was 1Y which can serve in a national emergency. After some years 1Y was done away with and those folks were changed to either 1A or 4F.

My great grandfather was in the 93rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the civil war. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Atlanta, Savannah, and Cold Harbor. I learned the manual of arms using his musket.

One grandfather was in WWI. Father, 4 uncles and an aunt (2 Navy, 2 Marine, 2 Army) were in WWII. My dad was in the Army and the Navy in WWII. Brother in the Army. I signed up in 1964 and retired in 1989 from the air force.

My Good Friend Eddie's GGRANDPA was from Iowa and fought at Vicksburg.
He apparently enjoyed it so much that after the War he moved down to Miss and lived in a Houseboat on the Yazoo River near Vicksburg.
Later they acquired some land there.
I have Deer Hunted on that property.
My GGRANDPA?
Rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Went back home after the War and resumed Plowing.

My Paternal G. Granddad was Civil War 4th OVI and 2 Maternal GG Grandads were Civil War; one in Georga and one in Alabama.

Mom's "Uncle Johnny" (actually great uncle) was Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion, & WW1. Her "Uncle Jimmy" was a Indian Wars, & Haiti and a few more. Mom's brother was USMC in Lebanon and Vietnam.

Dad's Mom's Cousin was WWI Infantry. Dad's brother was WWII Army Air Corp. My Wife's two uncles in WWII. One of those uncles, her brother and our oldest were all 3 in the 1/325 Airborne Infantry Regiment (1942 Glider/Bazooka, 1980 Parachute/TOW & 1998 Parachute/Javelin) all 3 were the same job, KILL TANKS!

Our second son was USMC 1999-2003

The next generation has 4 girls and 5 boys, odds are some will serve!

Dad and Uncle served in the Pacific in WWII. Mom's brother is buried in Henri Chappelle cemetery in Belgium.

Grandad, who died 14 years before I was born, served in WWI. My great grandfather was born after the Civil War, but two family relations died in that one.

Son did a tour in Africa and another in Iraq.

I graduated high school in 73. Had a draft number but they did not draft thay year because the guys were coming home from 'Nam...so I did not serve.

Grateful for all who did.

Robert

My ancestors served on both sides in the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War. One of my ancestors was a surgeon in the British Army during the Revolutionary War and stayed after it was over.

My ancestors also served in the War of 1812.

My father joined the Army the week after Pearl Harbor but was discharged during basic training due to asthma.

Some of my older cousins served in Korea. I and some of my cousins served during Viet Nam.

My son was in the Army and went to Iraq twice (06 to 07 and 08 to 09). A great uncle was in WW2 and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. His two sons were in the USMC and went to Viet Nam at different times. My uncle (Dad s brother) was in the Army and stationed in Florida during the Cuban missile crisis then Viet Nam. I did not serve as I was in High School when Viet Nam ended.

Maternal grandfather drove an ambulance and chauffeured Pershing around in WWI. My father was a Seabee in the Pacific and did the surveying for the atomic bomb pits on Tinian. I did 20 in the Air Force, primarily on B-52s, KC-125s, and A-10s. Son did 20 in the Marine and Navy reserves. I don't see the tradition continuing with any of the grandkids.

There were three of us "boys" in my family. We were all Marines. Korea, Lebanon and Viet Nam. I had numerous cousins in WWII and an uncle in WWI. In the Civil War I had a Guncle in the 58th North Carolina. He fought in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. My GGrandfather was a colonel in the North Carolina Home Guard. I had pioneer ancestors who fought in the French and Indian war. We all kept busy. God Bless America.

I guess we're kind of a military family. I don't know about as far back as some on here.
My Father was in the 1st Marines in the pacific, my Father in Law was in The Army as a paratrooper in the pacific.
I was in the Navy on submarines in the mid 60's, my Brother was 101st airborne just a little later in the 60's. Did two tours in Vietnam.
My Son was was in the Navy on submarines in the late 80's.
My oldest grandson is in the Navy as an Aviation Ordnancemen 2nd on Nimitz in the South China Sea.
My Granddaughter has been accepted to the Air Force Academy and starts this July.
And I still have twin grandsons in high school that have shown interest in service to our country when they graduate.
So I think my family has been at it a while. 😎

Interesting connection

I thank everyone for their service. My family has also served many times. Myself Navy Vietnam with Mobile Riverine Force. Father WW ll Coastguard on a LST. Grandfather WW l died from aftereffects mustard gas. Great great Grandfather Civil war 2nd Wisconsin Co C. 5th GGF British LT French Indian War he resigned commission when Revolutionary War started. It goes on farther but for all who have served thanks again.

My Dad was Navy served in Korea and Vietnam. Built a house with his sister and her husband (my uncle) who was also Coast Guard assigned to an LST in WWII. I have his service knife. He was wounded on Omaha Beach and we have his Orders for the Day for June 6, 1944.
So Dad Navy
Uncle Coast Guard
Older brother Air Force
My father in law Army
My son and brother in law United State Marine Corps

All I need is a grandkid to join the Space Force and we've covered them!

Thanks all for your service.

On my mother's side I had a relative that died on the second day at Gettysburg, Charles Frederick Taylor. My grandfather on mom's side again was in the Red Cross during WWI. Father was in the Army in a classified section that was listening to German traffic coming from East Berlin during the Cold War. I went into law enforcement but, my youngest went into the Army and did his 4+.

My ancestors served on both sides in the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War. One of my ancestors was a surgeon in the British Army during the Revolutionary War and stayed after it was over.

Seeing this post reminded me of our family's service to the King in the American Revolution. The father was a regimental commander of German mercenaries, the three sons were Battalion commanders. The King's navy provided transport to the Americas, but the King's paymaster never made the first payment, so no combat was ever entered into! The regiment was assimilated into the population of Pennsylvania's German speaking peoples. Those farmer's daughters you 'al make jokes about, are the GGG Grandmothers of many people on this forum!

..my father was with 1-7 USMC Korea...had 2 uncles in WW2 and 3 uncles in Korea..[ I get confused sometimes! ]
..I saw my dad's high school yearbook in a bin downstairs, and wanted to check out the stuff in the bin -and I'm glad I did
..I found copied letters my dad had written in the 90s, when he was with the Chosin Few ..I had always ''joked'' that he was lucky to get wounded so he wouldn't have to hump, in the cold, all the way to the coast...
--I quote the letter:
''' being wounded was one of the happiest days of my life''' !!
I've got tons of stories and memorabilia from my dad's stuff and from my uncle's WW2 stuff--to include one of the most sought after items = a Knight's Cross, also a pistol, armbands, pennants, etc etc
..I was USMC for 8 years--first duty sucked - Marine Barracks Hawaii....next enlistment with 3- 6 --went all over the world--on map red dots are military exercises.....green are liberty ports
