Mini 14

or even something like an Eotech are rather wasted on a Mini. (I actually once swapped a guy an Eotech sight FOR a Mini 14 and mags straight across.)

GF,

I was considering an EOTech for it. I'm interested in what you think of them for my evaluation. Anything you can tell me would be helpful, quality issues too. I know nothing about holographic sights. I do like the wide field of view.

My mini 14/30's

I would have to say that I love mine. The factory folder was a gun that I always wanted because of the coolness factor. When I finally came by one I could afford, I was extremely happy with how it shoots. I also have a Mini-30 and have had the same results. Weekend before last at the gunshow in Louisville, I had just purchased a Springfield M1a and was bone dry on cash and walked up on a pristine mini-14 stnls ranch rifle for $400. I scrambled and tried every way I could to come up with it. I hi-tailed it out of there and found an ATM and I swear to you I got all the way back to within sight of it and someone picked it up. Oh well, can't have them all.

My two Mini-14's and Mini-30 at the bottom.

GF,

I don't remember the model number that I had. Mine was the one that took AA batteries and was night vision compatible. That just allows you to have a special rather dim setting that works well with night vision gear - I actually have a PVS-14 laying about, but most people don't so I wouldn't worry about that feature.

My problem was that I apparently have a certain degree of astigmatism. Thus the recticle was blurry unless I got it "just right". Mounted scout style it was like... staring at a large TV screen... too. I never got used to it. I have better luck with C-Mores and Aimpoints. Customer service wasn't great the one time I had to call about something either, but it might have improved since.

Current EoTechs have improved battery life (still not like the leave it on for years and you'll be fine Aimpoints), and tolerate the heat better than old ones (which used to cook if mounted on AKs scout style).

It was supposedly quite durable, but the beat up old Aimpoint Comp M (early M68) that I have is probably about a decade old, a lot of the finish is gone, and still works fine. Thus that brand I just trusted more.

If it is an issue for you, it seemed easier to me to arrange a magnifier with an Aimpoint than with an Eotech, the Aimpoint worked better with my astigmatism, and I liked how easily I could co witness it.

I eventually just went with iron sights and my remaining 580 series Mini (purchased at Walmart of all places) is thus equipped.

I did like the Trijicon Acogs with Docter red dot piggy backed that I handled at a trade show, but their price point is such that I really couldn't see using them on a Mini or anything save a SCAR or what not. Living out here with Marines, my former neighbor - who was the weapon's bn - didn't like them though, saying that they took long to zero. Shrug.

Yea, I see your points. I seen examples of the magnifier with the eotech and eye relief, well, I don't want to find out the hard way my intuition is correct. When you mentioned customer service a lite went on in my head and I thought "Leupold". They have a reflex sight that deserves consideration. I have an old Leupold-Gilmore red dot I.ve been kicking around my junk box, but it's only 1".

I'm going off now to pick up the Mini. How they expect me to "cool off" when we here in CA have to needlessly wait 10 days. I'm madder than ever.
