My brothers friend had a mini Colt auto many years ago. It looked like a mini 1911 .45cal.
Does anyone know what model it is. I would like to find one. Also if anybody has one of these, could you post or e-mail some photos

It might have been a Government .380, these look very much like a mini 1911 minus the grip safety. This is possible unless it actually was a .45ACP in which case Colt did produce a chopped 1911 called the Officer's ACP.

If you'll allow me, here's a bit of extraneous 1911 info.

"Officer" sized 1911s are made by several manufacturers and tend to have barrel lengths from 3-3.5 inches. The grips are also chopped down slightly, losing one round capacity (6-7 instead of 7-8).

The next size up is a "Commander" sized. The grip frame is the same as a full sized (or "Government" size) 1911, but the barrel lengths are usually 4-4.25 inches.

Occasionally you see mixes of the two called a "CCO" model, where they have a commander length barrel and slide on an officer-size frame.

Now it's in your head and you're stuck with it.

Though they are much rarer, it also could have been a Detonics Combat Master or a Cylinder & Slide Adventurer. Both are made with an Officer's length barrel but a chopped (even smaller) grip:

The C&S Adventurer is very expensive ($2,000+) as it is a custom made to order gun. The Detonics gun is back on the market after a long hiatus and is priced around $1,000. I think they make the ultimate Ankle guns for the 1911 affectionado.

Funny - I was reading the above and then realized I WROTE IT a few years ago. Price is off on the C&S. Currently, they START at $3300 for a basic all-steel gun and by the time you go for a lightweight (titanium) frame, tritium sights and some checkering on the front and/or rear strap, you're looking at $4579!!! And while the Detonics seems to be offered, I have yet to read a review or see the current iteration offered at any store, whether brick-and-mortar, or Internet-based (so I'm a little leery of plunking down $1000 on something that seems to be untested - even if I could find one actually for sale somewhere).

I cannot understand why Kimber and/or Springfield hasn't come out with such a gun. How much design and tooling could be involved in chopping the grip on the Kimber Ultra and offering it as a super-compact model for instance? I'll bet there's thousands of people out there like me who carry a 1911 and would like to carry a backup 1911 in an ankle holster...
