Minor ring inside bore?

I have been eyeing a gun on an auction and the owner says it has minor ring about midway down the bore. Its a Model 625-8 4 inch barrel. He has a three day return period. Has anyone ever heard of this? What do you all think? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've seen some ringed barrels that stil shot OK, but typically it seriously lowers the resale price.

The guy wants 699.00 for it. With shipping and FFL transfer it would be 729.00 total. Any thoughts?

That 625 most likely needs a replacement barrel. New barrels run around $175. Installation by S&W is $100 plus you have to overnight ship it to them at approximately $45. You might be able to repair it for less with a used barrel installed by a local gunsmith, but why buy his problem?

I get a kick out of the sellers description of "minor" ring in barrel. As others have said, walk away. Why buy a headache at a new gun price.

Way overpriced for a gun with a ringed barrel that may not shoot to within a washtub at 25 yards. It could also be a tick driver but that's a big chance. Keep looking.

Thanks I think I will pass on it. I have consolidated all my ammo to 45 acp and want a Smith 45 acp. Hard to find one at a decent price but I will keep looking.

Yeah, that's like a "minor" crack in the frame or cylinder, or a "minor" bulge in the barrel.

As others have said, the gun will probably shoot just fine with the ring. Even though this is true it still properly affects pricing. If you can get it for $325 +/- fine. Any more than this pass on it. The price the guy is asking is right up there with what a clean used gun with no issues would be selling for.

Someone feel free to correct me but when I hear "ring" in the bore, I just think of someone firing a shot after a squib round has fouled the bore with a slug. If that happened, I wouldn't consider the gun a shooter.

As an aside, my uncle gave my Dad an old Ortgies .25ACP about 60 yrs ago. Some ****bird tried to rob him using the gun, fired once at him. Squib that fouled the bore, fired again, ringed the barrel but didn't hurt my uncle. Praise for crappy ammo, right? Don

DonD, that's what I understand a "ringed" barrel to mean. Someone fired a shot into an obstructed barrel... Regardless, $700 seems way too high for the gun.

It could shoot alright, maybe not but I've never seen a bulged barrel clean up acceptably. I would definitely pass on it, even if the price were far cheaper. I don't like the aggravation of sending the firearm back to the factory. Besides, as careful as the previous owner obviously was, there could be additional issues with the revolver. In my opinion, the seller should have repaired it prior to trying to sell it.

Steve wrote the important answer. If you want to sell your broken down car for the buyer to fix you can't reasonably expect a big price.

I once had (~2002-2004 I'd guess) a 25-9 with a factory ring in the bore. Looked like they had broken a cutter whilst boring before the rifling operation. It shot fine, but that gouged up spot bugged me no end so it got swapped off.
