Mis-marked model 29-2

I have no connection to this seller, but saw this on a local for sale board and thought someone might be interested:

It's probably, as the factory said a mis-mark. He's asking twice what it will sell for.

Mis-marked S&W's are seen with frequency on auction sites such as Gunbroker. The guns are usually described as "rare factory errors" and listed for ridiculous prices. Such guns command little if any premium over the price of a normal gun.

Because the coins and stamps are generally not hand produced and the incidences and origins are much rarer.

Virtually all the mis-marked guns I'm aware of are because of human error where the guns are hand stamped or markings are mistakenly left off.

"Optimistic" sellers (or choose your own descriptive word) look to cash in on the uninformed by hoping others will think the coin/stamp parallel applies to guns, as well.

And unfortunately, as someone who is uninformed spends more for something like that and then attempts to get HIS money back or make a profit from it, the misconception is perpetuated by others who don't know any better since they are led to believe they are being offered something rare and valuable.

I have seen dozens of mismarked model numbers. Must be very common.

I think you have a very accurate assessment. It's pretty common on gunbroker to see a listing claiming the item is "rare" when in fact it's very common.
