A member of another forum noticed a discrepancy with his new 629 and mine is the same way. Supposedly these are supposed to be 629-9’s and that’s what the label on my box says but the frame by the SN is engraved 629-8.

Does anyone know for certain how they're supposed to be marked?

Assuming this is an error on the engraving I’ve seen miss marked guns have high collector values since they’re rare. Is this something I should stick away for value and buy a second to be a shooter?

Curious what the members here have to say since there’s a lot of collectors.

I would take a very close look. I thought the same of mine. I had to take a clear picture with my phone and enlarge the image to see that it was actually a “9”. The way it was stamped made it look like an 8 with my naked, far sighted, eyes. That said anything is possible.

They are just using up the older frames that are already stamped. Basically the frame was stamped before they used it to build your gun. It’s not uncommon to see when they transition from one dash series into the next. I have a 29-2 that is not pinned or recessed so it’s basically a 29-3 just not marked as such. No added value.
