I dropped it off last weekend to a local gunsmith to have the action smoothed up. He does very nice work on S&Ws but a little busy right now so it'll take a few weeks. My birthday is the end of next month & this is my present to myself, should be ready just in time.

My 629-1 is great except for a typical heavy double action for that era revolver. He'll smooth things up nicely, I'll be patient and wait. Just sayin.

S&W Fan, I have a Model 629-1 and I would like to hear about the work you are having done. And how the gun shoots when you get it back. Good Luck..Ray

Did you try any of the aftermarket springs (main and rebound)? I bought a 629-4 with the aftermarket springs installed and I tell you, it is really smooth. Good luck with the work, I'd also be interested in hearing about how it turns out.

The 'smith has a 19-4 that was a heavily abused leo gun that he keeps around to demonstrate his S&W action work-it's amazing and 100% reliable. This is the 'smith I'm using, know lots of guys that have had Tim work on their guns:

The 629 shoots great but the trigger is very heavy and I prefer to shoot in double action. I'm also having him smooth the edges of the trigger without greatly reducing the width. Should run around $140 for the work I'm having done.

Here's a 1917 that late forum member Sandy Jacobs (IBSandy) had him blue and time. It was in really rough shape when Sandy got it, badly out of time & he wanted to have a nice shooter, not worried about keeping it original. After Sandy's passing his widow wanted it to go to my son (Army E5, 68WF-sgt, flight medic):
