Mississippi will go "Open Carry" July 1st

Good for MS!

AL is getting ready to approve a major expansion of gun rights. One of which will be to explicitly state that OC a firearm does not qualify for a Disorderly Conduct charge. OC is legal in AL but some jurisdictions don't like it.

Welcome to the club! OC is a right we New Mexicans have enjoyed for as long as I can remember.

Cheers!

My best to Mississippi. And a huge razzberry to the wimp RINOs in the Texas state legislature. Sad we have such scum in offices here. They just passed a campus carry here that allows schools to opt out. Texas campuses will remain criminal free fire zones.
And Mississippi has casinos. I may move.

OC is legal here in Kentucky but I still won't do it. I had a conversation about it with a range master today. The concensus is that if you go to the mall, the supermarket or wherever, some yutz is going to call the cops and say" there's a man with a gun here at the______". Next thing you know is you're laying face down on the floor getting your clothes dirty.

Same here in Indiana. Makes it a lot easier to carry though. I don't have to worry about whether or not its sticking out or not

Also what I like about open carry being legal where I am. If my shirt rides up Im not taking a ride in a cop car.

I know exactly what you guys are talking about. That's exactly what worries me. I carry either a full size 1911 or a 6.5" barreled 27-9. I hate little guns. I wear either a tactical type of shirt, open with a T shirt underneath or a Hawaiian type shirt also open with aT shirt underneath. In the wind, I'm always tugging on my shirt to keep it from blowing back and exposing my carry. It's a small price to pay but it's worth it. Remind me never to move to Cook County Ill.

While I support the right to open carry (OC) it's not something I'd ever do for a variety of reasons. It seems to make the most sense when a concealed weapon is mistakenly revealed so the person who is carrying does not face arrest.

It's unusual to see someone OC where I live and it almost always results in a call to the police, not from me, when it is seen here.

Come on over slfree, we always looking for like minded, gun loving, god fearing folks.

We have open carry here in PA. Here's an open carry story from my town.
My friend was in line At a turkey Hill to pay for his gas. There was a State Trooper behind him and a couple from New York State in front of him.
The woman from NY sees his gun as he always open carries. She starts to whisper to the man she was with. She looks frantic. Finally she blurts out "OFFICER THAT MAN HAS A GUN!"
The trooper smiles at my friend and says " he sure does". End of encounter.

I agree with this also, but I don't open carry unless I'm down the farm walking down the dirt road, why advertise. Yes, no matter what, the more liberties we have the better it is for us.

I am sorry guys.
With all do respect to those who may not favor open carry as a method, this is what really boils my blood...
Not the "frantic woman" but the citizens with the right of OC chicken out from exercising their right because their shirts may get dirty.

This is why our rights are disappearing here and there.
This is why to defend our god given right is a big struggle.

Because we can't change the public opinion when we hide in the shadows.

As a nation we came from a childhood where playing cowboys and indians were the best times of our lives, to a place, where a 5 yr old child can be suspended from school because during lunch hour he bit into a cookie made it look like a pistol!

Liberal media treating the parents who gave a BB gun to their kid as if they were child molesters.

They paint the majority of the public opinion with a wide brush of "if you see a gun, you're seeing a bad person"...
Therefore it is time to scream and panic!

Then they gave us the ultimate meaning of the Gun Ownership = A shameful act for crazy people...

When we have a chance that we can prove by practicing OC this is not true and change the public opinion towards our favor, what we do ??? Don't exercise this right because our shirts may get dirty!

I say wear an old shirt and get 10-15 even 100 friends and go to that mall, until local police begins to respond to the calls like:

- Officer, there are people in the mall with guns!
- Ok ma'am what they are doing?
- Well they are walking towards the food court with their children and some of them eating burgers!
- Don't worry ma'am, as long as those guys are around you're safe! CLICK.

Many people gave their lives to defend this nation and our way of life...
But we try to keep our shirts clean???

I don't think so !

End of the story!

It's not that we don't favor open carry, just the hassle from the mall security and some LEO.

Here in WV most officers get the call ask the dispacher if they are branishing if not they tell the dispacher to let the caller know this is WV carrying is legal no response to call. Here it on the scanner every so often.

And I stand behind that I personaly don't like to advertise. Bad guy sees it you are busy with your hands making a purchase or carrying something bad guy snatches your firearm. I know everyone but me would be able to stop them. I carry in a non snap locking holster for faster draw if need be, or in the pocket, I don't want to deal with a snap.
Try it open carry your firearm empty and triple check it is unloaded and have a buddy snatch it out of your holster see if your reaction time is capable of stopping the action.
I know it's your right in a state that allows OC but is it just the cool factor?

OC is a great tool for pro-gun side to establish a positive public opinion.

I don't mean if OC is legal in your state you MUST OC all the time...
Of course not !
But time to time we need to consider OC when we go in to a public area.
Maybe with a few of our friends who also OC too...
Let me see a BG dive between 3-4 guys with OC and try to snatch one of their gun.

If you scared a BG will snatch your gun, OC an unloaded gun and conceal a loaded one... There's your solution...

Get together with other gun owners, establish OC clubs... Go public events... LET the people SEE guns in a non-violent matter...

Let the people see, few guys with guns came, sat down, had coffees and left but still nothing bad happened.

Soon or later public will begin to warm up to seeing guns around them and not to freak out.

Let the LEOs get sick and tired to be called by a freaking anti-gun person for a non-incidental reasons 10-20 times a day...and soon they will begin to ignore those calls and won't harass people exercising their right to OC.
So, people soon will realize that these gun owners are not danger to society.

Only after that day, our shirts will never get dirty again.

It will take a little work my friend.

But while other side involved in a massive anti-gun campaign, we can't sit down, hide our guns and our gun ownership status and expect to win in the public opinion arena.

We are nearly acting like we do not exist. Then wondering why our rights disappearing...
That's what I meant.

I agree with both sides of this issue! There is an advantage to keeping the bad guys guessing who might be carrying. Its also nice to know if your shirt does move and expose your carry you are not a criminal. SC is considering open carry and I hope we go for it.

I grew up in KY, where open carry was and is protected by state constitution, no license required. I remember the hysteria when CONCEALED CARRY was proposed, with a license. "OH MY GOODNESS!! NO!! HOW WILL WE KNOW WHO HAS A GUN??"

I live in Oklahoma, who recently passed OPEN CARRY with license, and I listened to the hysteria, including many gun owners "OH MY GOODNESS!! NO!! PEOPLE WILL SEE THE GUN!! WE WILL OFFEND EVERYONE AND ALL BUSINESSES WILL POST!!!"

Well, frankly, the hysteria was all malarky, as it usually is.
I seldom open carry in stores and crowded places, but a few do. And mostly, nobody notices. The police in OK? Well, one did ask about a particuarly nice S&W 1911 I was wearing on my way to the range, had stopped for gas.

And in spite of Silver Dollar posting about the dangers of open carry in KY (which he apparently never does) I have done it off and on for over 40 years, including having a couple of PA and IL tourists go ballistic and call police, who advised them to mind their own business.

Yes, there are manners involved in any carry, including respecting other's rights and using common sense. Do it where legal or don't as your choice, but how about knocking off the hysterical speculation and "some guy said"?
That's just making a fool of yourself to the amusement of the gun grabbers and the annoyance of your fellow responsible gun owners.

And since when do we need more restrictive gun laws that infringe the 2nd amendment??

Oh, and those that are going to "snatch my open carry before I can react", have you ever heard of a Safariland ALS holster, or other level 2 retention holsters? Or is this just more hysterical speculation by "some guy"? I include the ALS holster demonstration in my OK Carry classes, and nobody catches on that it is a retention holster until I let them try to take the (empty) gun out, and can't. I draw it quickly again to show them that NO extra motion is required and the draw is as fast as open top, with the proper technique. Amazing what a little training and proper equipment can do.

Mississippi has allowed, without a permit, concealed carry if engaged in "legitimate weapon-related sports activity," i.e., hunting, fishing, target shooting, etc. I was a LEO in Mississippi for almost 20 years, including as a Chief of Police and an academy director. Not once did any officer in any department I was associated with make an arrest for a person carrying weapon, either open or concealed, who was either going to or from "deer camp," the shooting range, the lake, etc.

Mississippi has allowed concealed carry with a permit since 1997. Again, no officer in any department I was associated with ever made an arrest of a person with a "Fireams Permit" for legally carrying a concealed, or open, weapon.

Frankly, I don't see the need for an open carry law in Mississippi, but the Legislature didn't ask me. There will be some people who will wonder why a person is walking down the street, through the mall, etc., with a gun on their hip (I'll be one of those wondering why someone would do that when there is the legal option for concealed carry), and there will probably be some people who will panic at the sight of an openly carried gun and call the police, but I doubt there will be chaos in the streets.

I firmly believe in the 2nd Amendment (and all of the others too!), but I believe you must use some common sense, and not try to antagonize the anti-gunners, just because it's your right to do so.
