Having never done much work on a S&W revolver, I need some help.
I have looked at several online diagrams, but haven't clearly identified the parts, as the nomenclature has been different on a couple of them.

1) Can you tell me what parts are missing that keeps this 14-1 from cocking the hammer in DA?
2) Where can I order them? (Direct links would be really helpful! :D )

It is missing the double action sear on the hammer, which pivots on the hole at the 2 o'clock position above the hammer stud. Not sure if you are aware, but they did market a single action only model 14. I know, because I bought one once without knowing that. I picked up a hammer with the double action sear and luckily, it worked without any fitting. I sold it with both hammers long ago. what I don't remember, though, is if yours is a true single action only hammer - or if someone just removed the DA sear. I don't remember what mine looked like.

Tony,
That is the nomenclature I saw on one drawing, but many Google searches and trip through the Brownells catalog did not turn up any.

Are any other parts needed to install this sear when I find one?

The DA function on the hammer and trigger currently in the gun in the photograph cannot be restored.
The DA cams on both the hammer and trigger have been removed. (factory SA only))

If you want to restore SA/DA you'll have to purchase a new hammer and trigger, and have them fit to the gun.

Well, that answers my question...

Parts gun it is.

I was contemplating a renovation if I could return it to 'normal' function.
Would have rust blued the metal, as that is the only process I am set up to do.

armorer951, that jogs my memory. I had a DA trigger in my parts box way back when and only needed a DA hammer to make that 14 a DA. It was about 20 years ago. Thinking about it - I traded it for an 1897 Winchester 12 ga - which of course I no longer have either.

If the frame and barrel are serviceable, aside from the cosmetic damage, you could have a great shooter there with a minimum investment in parts and fitting.

Can you define 'minimal investment'?

It is a okay shooter now, as a single action.

Also, better pictures of the hammer posted in a few minutes. I'm not sure where the cam surfaces are, as I can see no evidence of modification to the hammer.

Standard hammer and trigger SA and DA working edges shown below.

Barring any other problems, the investment would be the amount of parts and the fitting labor, if needed. I would say approx. $100.00-$125.00. If you would like to sell it you have a buyer.

Those are some tiny surfaces!
The next Smith I have on hand I will be pulling the sideplate to see exactly how they interface.

Not sure if you are aware, but they did market a single action only model 14.

I did know the S&W had made single action only revolvers. I did NOT know models or any other information.

After watching the video and looking at the location of the double action sear, is this one of the single action 14's?

Could a double action sear be installed on the hammer in this 14?

Is that what armorer meant with this comment?

The DA cams on both the hammer and trigger have been removed. (factory SA only)

No, that is a factory SA only hammer, and DA function cannot be "restored".

The trigger currently in the gun will also need to be replaced in order for DA to function. The DA cam just below the trigger bevel that is necessary for DA function is not present. (factory SA only trigger)

From the posts last night, I understood that DA function would require replacement of the hammer and trigger.

I missed the detail of the currently installed parts being factory made. I was mistakenly thinking it had been altered and the cams removed.
