Exactly what kind of info are you looking for? It does appear that the trigger and hammer on your gun are not case colored, which would be standard...

Previous owner thought that his might have been a prototype
I was wanting to know if this is true or not
and I am also wanting to know the year of production
And appx. how many were produced

Vague question, you could get a lot more info with more specific questions. 19-4's are great guns, great shooters, carry and home defense. Trigger and hammer are either not original or someway polished.

Your gun was likely made in the late 70's. We need the serial number from the bottom of the grip frame to tell for sure. Since model 19's go back to the 50's (see links on this forum about Bill Jordan) it is doubtful that your gun is any sort of prototype.

Back to the trigger and hammer. These have not been
Polished or replaced in any way, shape or form.

"Other than it has not been modified"

Well, it appears that it has been modified by swapping in the stainless hammer and trigger. Standard would have been case hardened carbon steel.

Should be a good shooter, though.

The stocks have also been refinished. The tops have been sanded off the diamonds flattening them. Light would not reflect from sharp checkering that way.

As Muley Gil stated the hammer and trigger are replacements. They appear to be flash chrome parts from the stainless guns. S&W didn't issue the gun that way.

The "Combat Magnum", now Model 19, was introduced in 1955. Any "Prototype" would have pre-dated this. You bought the story, not the gun.
