MOD-27 info request

On of my friends showed up with a bag of old S&W’s. 3 in total but this one is fairly nice but neglected. Serial is S186xxx.

It is a 6”.

I have been tasked with “see what you can do with these” knowing that I have decent track record of “polishing turds” in the past lol

Anyhow, I keep a very small circle of friends and am glad I can do a little something for someone that has done a lot for me in the past.

Any info with dates or any info at all would be appreciated

It probably dates to the late 50’s. Those stocks are Cokes, which were standard on the Model 29. If they’re as nice as they look in the photo, they’re worth $400 or more.

Edit to add: Most 6” 27’s had Patridge front sights. Double check and see if that’s actually a 6-1/2” barrel. Measure from the front of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

It looks like a 6 1/2" based on it'r proportions

The 6 1/2" is my favorite length for target shooting

Many of us here on the Forum are very fond of the Model 27 and it predecessor

When it comes to the guns I take to the range on a regular basis, as long they lock up, I am not overly concerned if they are pretty.

I have other ones that fit the Pretty category

After a little TLC it is pretty dang good. I'd like to hose out the internals but I will wait. I think every drop of oil ever applied to the gun had congealed and there were at least 3 different shades of dried brown oil that were like glue. It all came right off.

This gun has a ramp sight. The worst booger on it is the top left corner of the front sight. It is deformed from what I guess is a drop. The checkering on the top strap/barrel is perfect.

I would call this one 80% and would consider it a great "shooter".

Now on to the 3" j-frame with the double diamond magnas and the 5" nickeled hand ejector.
