Just bought a new in box blued mod 29 { have not had one in around 10 years now}

and just sent it back to Smith under warranty to be refinished.
on the trigger guard and the right side plate. and crane area,ghosting on the blue and spot's.foggy bad finish. has anybody bought a model made in 2012 with these issues.also the inspector envelope was marked mod 36 38 special with 38 casing. not Mod 29 44 mag cal.however the serial number was correct.

I did not want to trade it back to the dealer or resell it to anyone with the finish problems.had somebody at the counter offer to buy as is from me.however the serial was a slick number to me #1818

I am hoping to get it back from Smith in a logical time span all corrected.with a proper blued and polished finish. with no flaw's.

i was a ffl/sot for over 38 year's.and have owned 100's of Smith and Wesson's.including pre 60 stuff. and this was a first for me.I just wanted to get another mod 29 {Also own one of those 629 3 inch Talo model'} and 100% happy with that one. Has anybody on the forum into Smiths had this problem with the 2012 production?? After i brought it back to Sportsman's. some said they are slipping in Quality.And i see no reason why this one was even shipped out with wrong inspect sheet. and finish issues'.{ and yes the barrel was on correct}no alinement problem.

it just ticked me off to spend good buck's after a long Smith lay-off > went to Colt's for awhile<

to just send it back for workmanship warranty issues.
I guess a lemon go's out once and awhile.it just happened to be my Lemon day!

I will report here the return service and any issues upon return.i am expecting back a great 29, sure not like the 60's. BUT maybe the 70's. RON K.

I've had that issue with a Ruger Blackhawk before. Just kinda light patches in the bluing, milky looking, not a nice even blue. Bound to have some slip through the door like that.

S&W will fix you up good as new.

I am glad to hear that..since i have never in forty years sent anything back.I thought the mod 36 38 special was cute. could not tell what was going into what box i guess. or maybe it was humor the customer day.

Report today after my letter 4 to 6 week's.I guess they must have a special line to form for a new blue finish.since i am sure they can make a brand new mod 29 in six week's.will see upon arrival, just how great it will look ..hope hope. springs eternal.RON K.

Well update a new in box mod 29 arrived today with a new 4473 form. and i said no thanks, i purchased the last one for its unique serial number #1818 S&W decided they could not refinish it and just sent out a new one for replacement.so i took my $920.00 refund and was done with it.

This was going to be a safe king for me.really disappointed it took them over a month to decide what to do. and take the easy road, and said send him another mod 29.

Some might say thats great!

not with a new form and not the same gun as far as i was concerned.
so far with my last two smith deal's. not all is working out for me today.RON K.

As a retired auto dealership service manager, I marvel at how things are done in other fields with gunsmithing being one of those.

In 2010, I bought a new-in-box 2008 special-run Remington Model 700BDL/LSS in .257WBY. On its second shot, the extractor and its tiny spring went MIA, so I called the closest warranty repair center, which is 90 miles away. I was told I could drop it off any time between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., so I told the person with whom I was speaking that I would do so that evening. When I arrived at 6:00 p.m., the shop was locked. I called the number I called earlier and was very curtly told that they were eating dinner and would be over to the shop when they were done.

Upon his arrival, the shop owner said nothing to me until he assumed his perch behind the counter. Knowing that the rifle was an older model, he challenged my warranty being in effect but fortunately I had my invoice with me. When I asked when the rifle might be repaired, he would only say that he would call when it was ready. When I asked if that meant days, weeks or months, I was very sternly reminded that I would be called. I tucked my tail 'twixt my legs and left.

Two months later, I was speaking with a Remington media relations person about a gun I was going to receive for testing and mentioned the kind of service I received and that the 10-minute repair had still not been completed. An hour later, I received an icy call informing me that my rifle was ready for pickup.

Right now, I'm contemplating having the integral red ramp front sight on my 4" 686-3 replaced with a pinned Patridge. I emailed S&W to find out what their charge would be and was advised that the part is 40-couple dollars and the shop labor rate is $90 per hour. When I asked again for a total price, I was told that one cannot be provided in advance.

Would you ever take your car to a shop that delivered that Remington warranty station's level of customer service or to one that refused to provide estimates in advance for fairly routine work it certainly has performed before? And does it make sense in cases like my sight replacement not to provide an estimate before the gun is shipped? After all, if I were to send the gun there but then felt their estimate was too costly, they would have wasted precious time in their shop and I would have wasted shipping costs.

I can understand that policy if I wanted something very involved done or a damaged gun repaired but for something they've no doubt done countless times and for which the procedure is not going to be any different when they have the gun in their hands as it is with the gun in mine, it doesn't make for good customer service.

I fully understand that between the buying frenzy were in now and some of the new gun problems we read about on here, they are probably swamped with work. But rather than risk the worst, I'll likely have the job performed by a local gunsmith.

Yes Ed seems like you have had a few problem's.Well i ended up finding a TALO ed. mod 629 3 inch on the net for $860.00 shipped.

and grabbed it. some might say they are not even worth $800.00, i don't care its going to sit in the safe as a nice safe king.It would have been great to have the four inch blue with the cool number beside it.

but at this point in life. i find on certain things i am really caring less for all of it....
no patience for gun smith work. or back ordering or custom work..Anymore. or used beat up guns that might need work.
too much out there to look at now!

Huh? You're kidding, right? You turned down a brand new gun that would have lettered from the factory direct to you??????

That now somebody else can have the chance to buy it..i wanted the #1818, not what they shipped.

the Talo will keep me happy.

and it would have lettered to sportmans not me direct.after 38 years of ffl/sot i retired.Life's way too short to worry about it now.

Gunsmiths take a special training course in being sour and disrespectful to their customers. Out of 25 or so (including many well known "Gunsmiths of the Year") only my friend, Venry d'Aiguillon (deceased) and Dane Burns (retired) treated me politely and with the customer service one might expect in business.

It is literally, a dying breed.

I had a 586 that was produced around 04 that had strange, blotchy bluing in two areas of the cylinder.I ended up keeping it because it was a great shooter,but after a few years I sold it and bought a very nice mid 80s original.
