When my brother passed his wife handed me a couple of his pistols in brown paper bags. One of them was his 44 magnum which I believe he purchased new around 1969. It is a Model 29 s/n s 1877XX 6 1/2" blue, with what I'm pretty sure are 'coke' grips.

As he kept it in a holster there is a bit of pitting at the end of the barrel but other than that it still has that beautiful S&W finish. I would post a picture, but am pretty illiterate when it comes to computers. Can anyone confirm the date of the gun as I remember it?

The gun probably shipped in late 1958 or sometime in 1959 (per the serial number). Guns shipped in 1969 were in the S300000 range.

Sorry about your brother. At least his wife is keeping the guns in the family.
If that is the correct serial number it looks like around 1959 period but you can't be sure without a factory letter which is well worth the money.

Actually 1958 or '59 is probably the date. I hit the wrong key on the date when I typed it. He was very proud of this gun and it was always his favorite.

I loaded some 240 grain simis over 8 grains of Unique to try it out and easily picked off shotgun clays at 50 yards with it.

Great shooter!
