I would suspect 1969 ~ 1970 shipping date.
(I base this on several that I own and have dates for.)
Two-Bit Cowboy should be along soon to nail it down for you.

Added: SCSW is what we call "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Supica and Nahas. Some refer to it as the S&W Bible.
It is a great reference resource - 5th edition due out any day now....

The series (J1-J99999) ran from February 1969 till May 1970.

Shipping dates are all over the chart and in no logical order.

J1 shipped May 1, 1970, and J99999 shipped January 12, 1970.

My J53346 shipped March 4, 1970, and J75846 shipped March 27.

Yours might have shipped before mine.

I have J176xx which is from 1969. Of course there's no telling when it actually shipped without a letter.

Here is SN 1710X, not awfully far from yours. I estimate the shipping around 1969 based upon a sales receipt for it dated 12/26/1969......

I really messed that up, looked in the wrong place Early J Frame
Serial Range rather than J serial Prefix. Duh my mistake. Sorry fellas I'm going to leave that stuff alone in the future! LOL
