Correct. With that serial number, it is a Chiefs Special (Model of 1953 - which means it has the lengthened grip frame and the egg-shaped trigger guard).

Member dakoontz has a Tyler tgrip for sale in the Forum classifieds that should fit that older J frame. It's a polished finish but the contrast would look good, IMHO. If you wanted to go that route. Either way, you have a nice example.

Would $500 be too much to offer for this? Looks by the photos to be 90% condition, I'll verify that tomorrow when I examine the pistol.

$500 would be my top end if I really liked it.

But …. It IS an old flat latch that's C&R eligible so ….. somebody will certainly pay that without hesitation.

Based on others in the database late '56 to early '57 should be its ship date.

It appears better than your 90% estimate.

In today's market $500 would be a steal as long as the mechanics are good and the right grip's s/n matches the butt.

Went to the auction house. Locks up tight, grips matched. Definitely better than 90% condition.
