hello all, just picked up a mod. 36 3" bbl. sq. butt. # 456xxx. 99% except small spot on backstrap. any ideas as to value/dob etc. thanks.

Approximately 1965-7. It's worth at least what you paid for it since, obviously, you were willing to give that much. Value is relative to overall condition and what part of the country you are located in. It could be worth anywhere from $200 to as much as $400, although probably from $250 to $300.

Regarding DOB . . . my 36-1 (same s/n series) with serial number 4562XX was shipped from S&W in September 1966. The factory made no effort to ship in serial number sequence, however, the model 36s were in high demand during that period so I suspect yours shipped at about the same time.

Does it have a flat latch cylinder release or is it standard shape?

(PSSST..........where's the pics? :))

In the absence of OP's pictures, allow me to show mine. Does the cylinder release look like the one on top . . . or the one on the bottom?

The top one is s/n 4562XX model 36-1 with 3" heavy barrel and square butt that I mentioned earlier, so I suspect your cylinder release has this same "standard" shape.

The bottom one is s/n 3854XX with the earlier flat latch. It is also different in two other respects . . . it has the standard 3" tapered barrel and round butt.

Hope this helps, Russ
