I picked up a Mod 4006 yesterday at my local fun store. In its former life it was carried by a California State Parks officer. It came with two mags and the original box. It was a little dirty at first, but after a little work with a Scotch Brite pad and some Mother's - it's not too bad now. Overall, I'm very pleased with it. My first Gen 3 was a Mod 410, & this will make a nice addition to my collection.

Also, with S/N VZD7463, anyone have any ideas on what the ship date might have been?

I have one exactly like that. Always wanted one with the Cali bear on it.

I would guess very late, around 1999 or possibly later, as these were made under contract and it could have been built/shipped even after they were no longer catalogued by S&W.....call them and they will give you the ship date.....you should also be aware that a S&W auto with adjustable sights that was ordered as a law enforcement gun is not common at all, the vast majority were fixed sight models, you have one sweet forty there, congrats.....

Thanks for the heads-up! Now I can tell my wife I got a "collectible" gun for a "shooter" price! Now I just have to explain the 4046 TSW I bought on GunBroker last night... :D

One thing to remember... These 4006's were piggybacked on a CHP contract, so if you need parts, be sure to let Smith know that you have a CHP spec 4006. There are a couple of differences.

Ah, to be a fly on the wall when that conversation takes place. ;)

Not to hijak, but how do you like the bobbed hammer? I'm possibly going to swap my spurred for a bobbed, but am not entirely convinced yet. Haven't picked up the pistol yet and I kind of want to test it out as-is first.

It doesn't feel heavy at all to me either. My normal carry gun is a steel framed 5" 1911, so the 4006 feels about the same on my hip.
