Small town farm auction this weekend has a Mod. 49 pinned not ressd. No box no papers. It looks like the typical night stand gun. 99%, but my latest Fjestads (23 ed.) says 260-300 and that just dosn't seem correct. I think the Ser. # is 558*** so I'm wondering how high to bid? Anybody. And thanks.

As described with pinned barrel (would never be recessed as that was only magnums and the .22's) and that condition around here would be in the $350 -$400 range.

I would also go up to $400, but I kind of like these ( see my avatar.):)

The 300 was for 100% and this piece just looks real good and that price did not sit well with me. I'm going to the sale and hope to get a deal. I'll go to the mid 3's depending on the other bidders, I've carried a 37 and 637 dash for decades and I think this 49 will increase in value over time. And if I want to I can tote it for a while cause it is not NIB, heck I'll prob. take it out back for some 148gr WC if I get it. Thanks for the numbers guys. I needed to know the market and you guys helped.

My 49 was bought new in '87 by my grandmother and it's still in the same cond. as when she first bought it (she only put about 10 - 15 rnds. thru it), but it won't be in this cond. for long 'cause as soon as the weather permits I'm headed for the range.
Shortly before she passed this past year she gave it to me and I looked it up in Fjestads (29th ed. ?) and it was closer to $500 in "Like-new" cond., if I recall.

BTW...stamped on the crane is the # 25569 and just below that is what looks like "F 21" in a larger size stamp, but it wasn't struck fully so it's hard to make out. Does anyone know what these stampings are?

I'd buy it, but like 1 old 0311 I'm a big fan of the Bodyguard. I'm wanting to complete my Bodyguard trifecta - a nickel model 49 from the mid 80's.

Why the mid 80's you ask? Because my model 38 Airweight (serial #AHH57xx) and my model 649 (serial #ALW93xx) are both from the mid 80's. :D

Then, after I find my nickel 49 (uh...S&W did make a nickel 49 in the mid 80's...right?) then I'm gonna go for the stainless steel J frame trifecta, by adding a model 60 "Chief's Special" and a model 640 "Centennial" to the mix.

my first "back up gun" was a 49 I bought used at a pawn shop for 100 bucks in 1977. I foolishly sold it when I thought I needed a self loading back up gun.....I just bought another 49, former Knoxville PD gun, lots of holster wear, but locks up tight. I paid 250 bucks for the well worn 49 I am carrying as I type this.
I will never be without a 49 again.....

Maybe it is just the shroud but this looks smaller than my 37's. I am working on the 637 dashes now but this looks to good to at least attempt to get. Could be good traden material for a Mod. 19 I dont have. If I win the bidding I'll most likely tote it for a while anyway.

Thanks Skeez. Guess I'll have to upgrade my library. This one had similler stampings I thought those were for internal use by the manufacturer.

Well I got the 49; 290.00, I feel like a kid who stole his sister’s candy. They sold an original 98-K for 95.00 can you believe it, the auctioneer said he did not know much about it he had been told it was a Mouser but he wasn't sure. The fellow that passed on was in his 90’s and they sold a German rifle out of his closet for 95 bucks. The only thing that kept me from buying the 98 was the fact I told my wife I wouldn’t spend more than 400.00. When I got home she said “why didn’t you buy the rifle”? I about fell down. I’ll post pics Tue. I have to run the Mod. 49, no dash, pinned, nary a scratch on it, thru the local FFL.
