Mod. 60

[Stinger4me]

S&W made a Chief's Special with a 3" barrel and adj. sights. The specific model may have been the 60-4. It was chambered for .38 Special. Will this gun stand up to +P rounds. I am wondering if anyone knows how many of these were made. Thanks very much.

Sounds like a model 60-7. Use + P, sparingly Made in 1990 Mine is a performance shop gun

As it has been posted here many times, S&W stated that any steel revolver with a model # stamped in the crane will be OK to use with a limited amount of +P's and yes yours falls into this category.

I forget the exact year, but many years ago Skeeter Skelton (gun writer and gun expert for a few magazines) torture tested a standard Chief's Special with hundreds (possibly thousands) of +P's trying to test the limits of the little gun. Bottom line was the Chief's Special came through with flying colors and showed no signs of failing. He then gave it HIS STAMP of approval.

Thread drift aside,

60-4 is correct.
Numbers, no empirical knowledge, but I have heard from a couple of sources that 650 were shipped. This one came to me with ugly rubber grips.

I believe they made two runs of them.The first had flash chromed hammer & trigger,the second was case hardened. I have one of each.Great gun!!

A fine revolver. The steel Js are tougher than the 38 special Ks. Less pleasent to shoot, though.

The first ones were made in the late 80's, 60-4 in 38 Special and a full lug barrel. Fantastic little gun, ideal size and weight with adjustable sights. I have heard somewhere around 1000 were made. It's companion, the 36-6 was limited to 615 made. The later 60's in .357 are also available in 3" barrel.

The 60-15 is in 357, and 3" barrel and should still be commercially available.
