mod.63 front sight

has anyone else had a problem with the height of the front sight on the five inch barrel model 63? with the original sight my point of impact was six to eight inches low at seven yards. the factory kindly sent me a shorter sight blade, which i had drilled and installed at a cost of $25. now i have the opposite problem. with the rear sight all the way down, the only ammo that will hit point of aim is 30 grain super high velocity stuff, which is not particularly accurate in this gun. i have a sight blade coming that should split the difference, but the installation costs are beginning to bug me.

I don't have a M63 or any answers to your questions but 6 to 7 inches at just 7 yds. sounds pretty bad. Is this a new gun?

If it's any help to you I just measured my 5" front sight blade at .242".
I've got the rear cranked up pretty far. It's .065" above fully lowered.
You could take a file to the original one that's too tall.

Yeah, it's a new gun, and the only S&W I've ever had this problem with. For whatever it's worth, I suspect the factory used the same sight blade as the 3" straight barrel version, without considering the effect on muzzle rise the weight of the 5" lugged barrel would have. I've filed front sights when necessary, most recently to get my 442 to hit to point of aim with 130 grain +P ammo, but I don't really have the skills or tools to do a professional looking job. Since it is a new gun, and it has an interchangeable front sight, and I love the little thing in all other respects, I guess I'll just keep trying until I get the right one. By the way, sorry for the sort of grumpy first post on the forum, but I'm not a computer type person, and it took most of an evening to get past problems I still don't comprehend and get registered here.

My 5" (with a trigger job) is the best J-Frame .22 I've ever owned, and I've owned them all. It competes with K-Frames of all barrel lengths.
