"MOD. 68-1" ?'S

The ? is, is it a mdl 681 no dash or a mdl 681-1. I know it's no rare treasure, just one of many misprints, not sure if it's a no dash or not, it's a 4" if that matters. I bought the 681 & a 640 no dash at the same time from the same guy. The 640 is mint with presentation grips, the 681 is app 85% with holster wear on the cylinder. Paid 625$ for both the night Obama was re-elected. I'm seriously considering having a smith cut a dovetail into the 681 front so I can get a taller front sight (likely a fiber optic). I use it a lot for bowling pin & steel challenge & it shoots everything high. ser # is AEA834*. thanks for any help/opinions.

What is stamped in the frame cut out for the cylinder yoke? Any photos available? Going by your serial number it looks a 1984 manufacturing date, the 681-1 came out in '86. The SCSW states that there is at least one marked "Mod 68-1". Not sure if any of that helps, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along to clear it up.

S&W manufactured a 6 inch stainless, K-frame 38 special, with adustable sights and shrouded ejector rod, as a special order for the California Highway Patrol.

Basicly a Model 66 in 38 special, it's designation was Model 68. I would suppose that a 68-1 would be a later version.

If you're shooting high, you want a shorter front sight, not higher. A higher front will cause your shots to go lower.

Thanks Larry I believe you are 1/2 right. A taller front sight will make me hit lower, which is what I want. If this gun was Indeed so rare, I would never think of altering it. It's simply a mis marked 681, which is a 686 with fixed sights, I believe. The yolk markings are EXACTLY as I put IN QUOTATION MARKS in the first post. the whole mis mark thing is a non issue. I just wanted to know if it was a no-dash or a dash-1, and thoughts about having a dove tail put in. Thanks for the replies and the ser # look up.
