There is a Model 68 on Gun Broker which has a 4" barrel. The S&W on the barrel appears to be centered on the barrel. Anyone know of one like this? I have only seen the 6" versions.
Thanks for any education on this model.

Larry,
I believe the 68's only went to a -2 version. The gun on GB says .357,the 68 was a .38 spl. It may be a model 66 because of the small trademark on the left side. Originally a large one on the sideplate later a small one on the left side per Standard Catalog. Some of the 68's have the 66 stamp under the 68 stamp in the crane. Maybe an over run 68 frame that was actually built as a 66? Hope this helps

Use a loop/magnifying glass.....

Sometimes the model stamping is so deep that the numbers can appear to be something else with the naked eye. I'd use a jewelers loop to look at that model number to see if it's really a M66.
I've not seen a 4" M68 - anything is possible, but with the barrel marked as a 357 Mag, the gun is a M66.

I may be wrong, but I believe the M68s were made only for the LAPD and CHP special order in .38 only. All were 6". I know that all the 68s that came into the Los Angeles Police Revolver Club were, because I helped unload them. Mine, as "SmithNut" stated, is overstamped with an "MOD 68-2" stamp. A "66" is clearly visible underneath.

My CHP marked Model 68 is an over stamp on a Model 66 frame as well. If it is a .38 Special, 4" stainless revolver with adjustable sights it most likely is a Model 67. It could also be a cut down 68.
