Model 1 2nd Issue

Hi all,

Just picked up a new highlight of my collection - Model 1, Second Issue. Serial number is in the 77XXX range. Stamp inside grip on wood matches. A lot of the silver plating still exists and isn't too tarnished either. Grips are good and not much pitting anywhere. The cylinder is in the roughest condition....can just barely make out some of the patent text, only July, really. Mechanics seem to be good as well, timing, lock up, hammer, etc.

Any way to date this? Haven't had any luck online....doesn't seem to be a serial number lookup like on the Colt webpage. Also, stupid question but....is the 'ejector rod' really an ejector rod? It doesn't seem to want to move at all, in, out, or twist, or otherwise. I don't know what it's supposed to do.

Welcome to the forum. The ejector rod is designed to eject the spent cases from the cylinder when the cylinder is removed from the revolver and pushed by hand on the rod. The rod doesn't move like that of a Hand Ejector. Crude, but effective for the 1870's.

Welcome to the Forum. That revolver would have shipped right at the end of the Civil War, most likely 1865. Nice overall condition, with very little pitting noted on the face of the cylinder or the barrel assembly.

There was a great demand for this gun during the Civil War and it was said that there were so many orders during the war that it took a some time after the war was over to fill them all at the factory. This model ran from 1860 to 1868, with almost 115,000 made.

Late 1865 jives with the serial number/date combinations I've scribbled down over the years.
