I recently picked up a sweet model 1 second issue that appeared
To have gorgeous blue on the barrel and frame. After wiping it down
Several times I noticed the finish coming off. Da-silver plate with
140 plus years of tarnish dose looks blue. The question is do you polish the Silver plate or not?
how would that affect the value

What I think you are seeing when you say the finish is coming off, is that the 140 years of the patina (which is dark) on the silver is coming off. Once it's gone, you will have to wait another 140 years for it to return. Most collectors will say to leave the patina on the silver and generally the market value of the gun supports that, in that a cleaned up and polished silver finish does not bring the values the patina will bring. Having said all that, I think the Model One S&W with a minty blue finish on the barrel & cylinder ( you said barrel and frame, I think you meant barrel and cylinder, as there were no original blued frames on Model Ones, 2nd issue) is maybe the only gun that does not lose much value when the patina (tarnish) over the silver plated frame is very carefully removed without damaging the silver plate. Just my opinion. Ed.

The finish I'm referring to appears to be silver plate, turned black from oxidation.
The frame is brass, silver plated. The edges of the frame are showing brass where the silver
Has worn through. The cylinder shows no sign of finish.
I thank you for your advise and will leave the Oxidation remain.
