Update on my model 1 type 2...... i opened the gun and found the true serial # underneath the rosewood handle 27218 also there is a 3 digit # on the bottom of the steel handle 143 this number is also on the back of barrel near bore hole as shown.....any new comments? thx

My earlier PM that you received had my comment on a blue cylinder, I believe. What I said was that a blue cylinder is correct for your gun, but be sure any cylinder you acquire is a S&W cylinder and has the cylinder stop notches on the rear side of the cylinder. S&W copies made by other, such as Manhattan Arms, etc., can have the stop notches on the front end of the cylinder. These cylinders will fit in your frame but will not function correctly. A S&W cylinder will have, at least, the 1854 patent date roll stamped around the cylinder. Ed.

this cylinder fits and works fine..pull hammer back and it turns clockwise to the next bullet slot.....but shouldn't the correct cylinder for my gun be smooth on the outside? no groves? also barrel latch i received from my friend is to small does not clear the hole for the screw plus to short side to side as shown....please help

The cylinder in your photos is from a 1st Model, 3rd Issue. I suspect that the barrel catch is from the same 3rd Issue revolver. Mike #283

Yes. Looks like you have a cylinder from a No. 1 3rd Issue. (I'm amazed that it indexes correctly.)

OK THX mIKE......ANother expert in Maryland told me that the barrel itself if incorrect.....for this gun..that it was put on later date....why then does the barrel and the handle have same 143 on it? don't get it......some more expert insight be nice....thx

I think that the barrel comment was based upon the belief that the fluted cylinder belonged to the revolver (I.e. a 3rd Issue pistol; not a 2nd.). Your frame and barrel have matching "Fitters" numbers. Your missing cylinder would have had that number also as that kept all the 'fitted' parts identified for the final (after plating and bluing) assembly. Mike #283

Mike, I'm not sure that I agree that the fitters/assembly numbers match on the barrel & frame.. The barrel is 143, but the frame number looks like 148 in the photo. If it is 148, then that would explain why there's evidence that the barrel may be from a First Third gun. Ed.

A little cleaning with a bronze brush and Kroil would help. I see 143 on both parts but I've also said that I need a new monitor.. maybe if the OP would hold the revolver a little closer to the computer we could tell. Mike

IT IS DEFIANTLY 143 ON BOTH PARTS....DOES THAT MEAN THEY WERE MADE FOR SAME GUN OR MULTIPLE GUN TYPES .... MY FRIEND SAID THIS BARREL DOES NOT BELONG TOO THIS MODEL 1 TYPE 2 FRAME....THAT THEY ARE JUST ASSEMBLER #'S ANY COMMENTS? OR EXPERT VIEWS...THX

Same gun. They are assembler's numbers that are used to identify all the fitted parts for a particular revolver. Your barrel and frame, according to the assembly numbers, are for the same revolver. The odds of finding two identical pistols of the same type (and age) with identical assembly numbers would be astronomical. Without holding the revolver in my grubby hands; I do not see why your friend said the barrel does not belong to that ("TYPE 2") frame. The frame has been rounded (modified) but I believe it started life as a 1st Model, 2nd Issue ("TYPE 2") and I believe the barrel is correct for that revolver as evidenced by the matching assembly numbers. ok so i should not ! break the pcs up?(barrel /frame) he said the barrel latch is what is troubling him...as u can see by the last pic...the barrel latch he sent was way to small and is from the same gun that the fluted cylinder he sent was from it was a type 3 i believe...is the barrel latch that much smaller then my type 2 ...trying to figure out if the moDel 1 type 2 indeed has a LARGER BARREL LATCH SO IT WOULD FIT MINE...IS it possible that the model 1 type 3 latch he sent is that much smaller? in other words shouldn't a authentic model 1 type 2 barrel latch FIT MY GUN?... also shouldn't mine have a non fluted cylinder ? please help...THX

Yes to all your questions. The "model 1 type 3" latch is that much smaller and the ends are knurled. You should look for a non-fluted cylinder also. The "model 1 type 3" was redesigned/modernized with a round barrel, birds head grip frame, fluted cylinder and an overall rounded/contoured look.
