Can someone please tell me the DOB on a Model 1, .22 caliber, Serial # 48710

Also , is it possible that the silver finish would turn dark blue/black over time?

What are the general values of these are?

Thanks.

1860 to 1868 2nd Change s.n.'s 11672 - 126361

1868 to 1881 3rd change s.n.'s 1 - 131163

This right off of page 292 SCSW 2nd ed.
Looks like the s.n.'s started over with the third change. Need to see a picture.
Probably need to talk to Supica about what it is worth but looks like the values could be $5000 to $10,000. Chemistry is a funny and fun subject. That discolorization could be some sort of clouding of the plating to loss of the nickel and your now looking at the base flashing to bare steel, again I would think that Jim would be able to help you tremendiously. Try contacting him at [email protected]

Here are some pictures. I rubbed on it lightly with a cloth and the blue "patina" came off revealing a silver finish. (Stupid of me)
Anyway, here it is.

It has a # 6 or 9 stamped inside under the barrel and on the cylinder.

Cylinder has 3 patent dates, April 3. 1855, July 5th 1859 & Dec 18 , 1860.

Any other info I am missing?

Appreciate any and all received.

These were available in full nickel plate, or in two-tone silver plated frame with blued barrel.

Looks like yours is silver/blue.

By looking at the side plate, that's a second issue or change gun.
1860 to 1868 2nd Change s.n.'s 11672 - 126361
I realy have no knowledge but by looking at the SCSW 3 ed, I'd guess $5000 to $6000. Again, you need one of the EXPERTS to help you. Maybe one of them will jump in here after while.

I hope I look that good when I'm 140+ years old. I don't think I would rub on it anymore, as it maybe worth more with the patina left on it.

Forgot to mention that the barrel is also marked along the top "Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass"
The grips are also stamped with the serial.

It's a Model One, 2nd issue, handsome looking gun, congrats.

Silver on the brass frame is a standard finish, and it will indeed tarnish darker & darker to almost black over the years. I'd strong suggest you not wipe off any more tarnish, that dimishes collector's value & the authentic appearance of your gun.

It's impossible to guess from photos, but if I had to, I'd suspect the barrel & cylinder might have started as blue, and now have lost their finish to a gray patina. You might find traces of original blue in protected areas if you look (bottom of barrel behind ejector stud for example).

IF it does indeed have most silver & little blue left, we might guess it as a 50% gun, which, if the gray metal is not pitted badly, could rate as "Fine" under NRA antique standards.

In SCSW we estimate the value of a No. 1, 2nd issue in Fine condition at $500.

You could also look at my for sale listings on my www.ArmchairGunShow.com website & see what I'm asking for comparable guns. Here's a link directly to the listings:
http://armchairgunshow.com/otsDSA_SW_tipups.htm

I see 1st 2nds there as follows:

* Rare early square plate, Fine, $1,350
* Rare 2nd Quality, Mixed, $525
* Standard model (like yours), Fine $450
* Standard model, Fine +, $885
* Std., ivories, Fine, $650
* Unusual mkg., Fine, $540
* Std., about Exc., $750
* Std., mixed, $185

It's important not to confuse Model One, Second Issues with Model One, First Issue, Second Types.

The Mod. 1 2nd Issue brings the values above.

The very rare Mod. 1, 1st Issue, 2nd Type can bring values in the $5,000 to $10,000 range (or more or less depending on condition).

General info on identifying various S&W tip-ups is on my website here: http://armchairgunshow.com/SWTU-info.html

More detailed info can be found in the Jinks, Neal & Jinks, or Nahas & me books.

Hope that helps. -- Jim
