Model 10-5 5"

Sorry I've been absent for a while. I have been extremely busy the last few months and it probably won't let up until mid-November. But - I'll be back eventually!

Right now I have a question about a Model 10-5 I've come across.
It has a 5" barrel that seems to be original. The gun is ANIB.
I have never before encountered a Model 10-5 with this barrel length that I can recall.
The box label has #815 written in blue ink in the Special Features box. Is this an indication that it was a special order gun? Or am I mistaken about the commonality of 5" barrels on the Model 10-5. It is a tapered barrel, as it should be on a dash 5.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Don't know about the #815 in special features . . . and don't know how common they are . . . but I have a 5" Model 10-5 with s/n C737305 that shipped in February '65.

I have one from 1969. I really like the 5 inch barrel and I don't think they are rare.

I had one a few years ago, but sold it finance something else.

I don't think they're rare, but maybe "uncommon" is the right word.

The 5" barrel was very popular with some Canadian Police Forces, in particular the RCMP who issued them right up until the adoption of the wonder 9's in the early 90's.

I have 2 10-5 5 inchers. both are marked Detroit police.

I have a 10-5 5 inch made around '70. I prefer it to my 4 and 6 inch barreled 10's. Maybe it's "just right."

I do not think they are necessarily uncommon. They might not have been as popular as they should have been as the 5 inch is one of the best lengths. The extra inch makes up for the slightly less weight of the tapered barrel and gives the revolver great balance. Get it if you can.

I was unaware of them! Very nice looking and I bet they shoot like crazy! I have an old Wells Fargo 4", tapered barrel that's deadly accurate. 5" must be even better!

I have record of having a 5" 10-5 that I sold a year or two ago. The SN is not readily available but I have it somewhere. It was a really nice one that a friend talked me into selling to him.
