Model 10-5 age / value

This is my first post. Please let me know if I should have done anything differently.

I have a model 10-5, s/n D571xxx. Could someone please give me an approximate age? Bought it for $288. Was told it is a police trade-in from Victoria, Australia.

Welcome to the forum. So far you are doing everything just right.

With that serial number, your Model 10-5 was probably shipped in 1973 or 1974. The Australian connection is interesting. Is the gun marked in any way to indicate former service as a law enforcement sidearm?

That's a fair price for a Model 10 in good working condition. Feel free to post a photo. There are instructions in other sections of this forum on how to do that.

You bought that gun revolver right and it's a S&W classic in terms of being their most produced revolver and it was sort of the bread & butter of the company.

Seriously these regularly change hands for $250-$300.

There were a ton of these Victoria Police Armoury Model 10s brought back to the US as trade-ins on newer firearms. Most if not all are in the "shot very little - carried a lot" category. You'd find 3" and 4" barrels, round- and square butt frames in the mix in every combination. I got one of the 4" RBs and it's not the best finish, but it has the smoothest action in my small collection. They are indeed the most common S&W revolver out there, but that just means the company built the Model 10 to be "the" police revolver, and the huge numbers purchased over the years prove them to be right! Enjoy!

I bought one of those from Bud's Gun Shop. It has a 4 digit serial number and dates to 1968.

The only markings from Victoria is a stamp of sort sort (plastic?) stuck on the right side under the rear sight with the initials of the Victoria Police. I left it on there for "history".

You got a great deal. I paid $299 + FFL fee for mine and thought it was a deal. Oh, mine is a 3 inch. GREAT GUNS.

I bought mine at Bud's also. 3" barrel too, $288. 4" barrels were $268. But they were out of them. Only had 3 3" barrels left. Bought the best of the 3. Saw recently where the 3"ers are now $299.

BTW. I didn't like the factory grips. Bought a hogue grip. Love it! Seems to shoot more accurately than I am capable of. Will try to get a picture soon.
