Model 10-5 Questions

I found one locally that's in good to very good condition for $400. Just the gun, no box. Is this a good price?

Also, any concerns with firing +p ammo?

Price is fair as far as I can tell. Maybe better than fair if the gun is really in nice shape,

I don't use +P ammunition.

I have always considered +P fine in my steel framed .38 Smiths.

I have a 10-5 pencil barrel that I found in LNIB condition at a gun store that was closing down a couple of years ago. I forget what I paid for it, but I think it was less than $700. I'll wait until the OP manages to post a pic of his first because I don't want to hog his thread.

My Model 10 is the heavy bbl & wears these grips.

On a blued steel gun, they really make it stand out, IMO.

A pencil barrel! If it checks out as far as function, it's a good deal. Take someone along that knows revolvers.

I say go for it. My 10-5 was a great buy 10 years ago at $350; guns like this are a lot higher now. You can't go wrong.

The finish does appear to be very good. If it is mechanically sound, then $400 is a very good deal in today's market. As for +P ammo, perfectly safe with it. Other than boutique ammo makers like Buffalo Bore, most +P 38 Special ammo is only slightly warmer than standard pressure 38 Special.

I shoot Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman loads through my 4” 10-5. Ballistically they are equivalent to mild 357 loads. No ill effects. I don’t need another model 10 but I’d gladly pay $400 for that gun

That load is pretty much a duplication of the old .38-44 HD load, the precursor to the 357 Magnum, and should run about 100 fps or so slower than full power 357 Magnum.
