I have the oppurtinity to get a Model 19. I was talking to one of the LGS owners and he said he had one for 300. The only thing that strikes odd to me that it is in 38special. I thought they were 357? Either way would it be a good deal for me?

I've got a 19-5 with a 2 1/2" barrel. Great shooter with .38 and .357. I think the Model 19's are some of S&W best guns.

I have always been leary of the K-frames my self.Always been worried about the forcing cones of them. I plan to go take a look at it and i may buy it.It will depend on condition.

I saw one at a gun shop a few years ago. It was in like-new condition and they wanted $500 for it, IIRC. I wish I had bought it because you don't see them much. :(

Now yall got me kinda excited about it. I want to get over there soon. I have to wait because my vechile is down.

Turns out it was a 10-6 heavy barrel. Blueing is perfect and timing is like a bank vault

Thanks man i was just wondering. I will post ppics soon. i went ahead and got it. It is near perfect condition. there is no wear on it at all

you should buy that model 10 and shoot the snot out of it....it'll outlast you

About all I carried were K-frames and a few J-frames. I loved them both. The last pistol I used in competition was a standard factory Model 10 with factory wood grips and a tyler t-grip adaptor. I never hesitated to fire magnums in K-frames and after thousands of 125 and 158 grain full power loads only had a problem once. It's just a non-problem as far as I'm concerned. Just keep an eye on it for safety's sake, but then you should be routinely checking any cone every time you clean the weapon and that should be after every use or if carrying open to the elements of perspiration at least a couple times a month, if not weekly (when working in uniform my 19 was cleaned weekly). That Model 10, by the way, will gobble up 158 grain +p loads like a hungry cowboy at a free chili feed at roundup.

Thanks for the heads up JC. I really like it so far. I plan to shoot it this weekend. What would ya carry in it for SD. It is my only carry gun for now. If anyone could help me find date of man facture that would be nice

I preferred an old-fashioned pancake holster behind my strong side (right) hip, usually by Bianchi or Galco, in just the right place to punish my kidney. I also had an inside the pants holster by Mitch Rosen that I loved and being of "mature girth" the butt snuggled into my love handles like a life-long partner. I carried it just a little bit farther forward so the outer edge of the butt didn't print. In our department being able to effectively conceal was a mark of professional pride. No matter how hot, we wore jackets or carried otherwise so no one knew we were armed. By regular we were supposed to be armed 24-7. The only problem I had was finding pajamas that would hold it up.

thanks fo all the help JC. what load would you recommend for SElf defense. I need it to be redialy avaible.

For magnums, any of the major factory (including Cor-Bon) 125 grain semi-jacketed hollow points. In 38 Special, any of the major factory 158 grain soft lead hollow point +P or +P+. Personally, I've always like Cor-Bon or Federal, but that's definately a persona bias. Don't be afraid of the magnums on a 2.5 Model 19. They are rugged, but with proper grip and practice they are managable, but not pleasant. I wouldn't want it publicly admitted, but I usually carried +P+ and felt secure all night. I've seen what they can do to just about every part of the body and it is not pretty. If you can get them, the old Nyclad rounds made for the Chiefs Special is a good standard velocity round that's a pleasure to shoot, but very expensive.

jmathis84, I saw a old but nice Bianchi Shadow 8L pancake holster at a local pawnshop a few weeks ago for $40.00, IIRC. Are you anywhere near Gwinnett county? If not, I can check on that for you Friday.
