hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me out with figuring the date on a piece I just got, and whether or not I did good on the deal.

S&W Model 10-8, 4" heavy barrel
lower part of Crane says G13 91391
Have not yet taken grips off yet

Has some finish wear on barrel and frame, little bit of pitting on the right side of the hammer. Doesn't look to have been fired a ton, but has been fired.

From everything I could find, I think I got a decent deal. I'd just like to know how old it really is and maybe if it's worth anything. I had planned to make it a truck gun but if I can flip it I might do just that.

The seller seemed to think it was an 80s police trade, I know 10-8's were made 1977-1988 so it definitely has to be at least 1977, and the g13 seems to be some factory build number.

It does have fixed sights, so the serial *should* according to my research, have a D series prefix. IN that series, 91391 seems to fall in this range:

2D80,001 – 2D99,999...making it a 1978.

It has pachmayr grips on it and I just picked it up today so I haven't had a chance to take them off and look yet.

Hello,
The number you are using as the "serial#" is in fact the assembly number and doesn't have anything to do with when it was made. The serial# is on the bottom of the grip frame or "butt" of the revolver. You will have to take the rubber stocks off to see it. The G13 would be an inspector marking and the purpose of the assembly number is to keep fitted parts together during assembly.

gotcha. I did end up getting to take the grip off just now and it was an 11D prefix which aligns with:

9D44,501 – 17D8,900………1982

If I'm not mistaken, making it a 1982 Mod. 10-8.
