It ceased when grooming standards went away for the most part.

Have you seen the scruffy beards that are now allowed in the military?

Then there's LE. With all the tattoos, beards and grossly overweight folks, it makes me wonder if there are grooming standards much less physical fitness standards.

Everything gets sloppy when there's no pride.

I'm just a casual observer, my opinion is meaningless.

Yep, lack of pride and PT/BMI standards relating to ability to do a job (ie; fat cop chasing suspect), etc.
And nothing against ink. It's your body, time and money.
But I'm not sure if the suspects with sleeves that I see talking with tatted cops, who's impersonating who???
My question concerning man buns for LE, I wonder if that was a hinderance during custody and control training, ground-fighting techniques, etc?
Also, meaningless and not even my opinion, just my observation.

What do you mean by squared?

Like the blocked hat where it was stiff and stood up?

I think that started to fade in the late 80's depending on branch. I also think ballcap style hats of today don't hold up like they used to and not sure the hat blockers still exist?

We wore the 5 point style chaufer cap in LE so not sure how that could be altered. The ballcaps they went to now are ballcaps so not really squareable.

I always scratch my head at some of the hat folding/blocking of the dress hats in the NE.

When uniforms moved to being more comfortabls and utilitarian many of the standards went out the window.

Beards and tatts are just a sign of our time. I used to tell our recruiting guy he looked like a cast extra from the Sons of Anarchy.

As long as they can do the job I was never overly concerned.

Im in 100% agreement on the man bun. We can sport a beard fr 20$ a month from november to the end of february. Money gets donated to charity. Hats are optons. Mostly for parades or keeping your head and neck burned outside.

MacArthur was a copycat. Idiot First Class Admiral Sir David Beatty set the standard before that. Note hands in pockets.

My mother was a nurse. I remember in the 70s always seeing her nurse's cap, starched to a tee and plastered on the front of the washing machine to dry flat. It was a required part of the uniform. By the time she retired in the late 90s nurses' caps had all but disappeared. Uniforms evolve and standards change. It didn't affect the professionalism of the nurses.

I don't recall anyone in the Army or the Navy pushing "squared" wearing of the "combination cover" but, offhand, I don't recall anyone wearing one tilted, either. It didn't take a lot of hair to wear that cover straight, and I would have felt weird tilting it. See below.

The Dallas Police Department currently permits facial hair and tattoos. But they also are now authorized to wear cowboy hats, which I think is a very cool change. Fort Worth and some other local towns have been doing it for years.

I think the facial hair thing stems from SpecOps personnel being permitted to do it, all these tough guys sporting facial hair, etc. The tattoos come from the SpecOps folks, too, but it is also a 21st century (and earlier) cultural phenomenon. I remember some very hot women sporting ink in certain noticeable places as far back as the 1980s. Sporting ink here, there, and everywhere became super popular, you see it on all of the athletes, Hollywood icons, and military personnel. Way back when, you never saw it except on certain criminals, and seafarers/Sailors from all services/Marines. But it caught on in a major way.

To understand the prevalence of tattoos consider this AI answer to the question of how many Americans have tattoos:

To understand the prevalence of tattoos among Americans, consider the following points:

  • Approximately 30% of Americans have at least one tattoo.
  • The percentage is higher among younger adults, particularly those aged 18-29.
  • Women are slightly more likely than men to have tattoos.
  • Tattoo popularity has increased significantly over the past two decades.
  • Cultural acceptance of tattoos has grown, influencing more people to get inked.
  • Many individuals view tattoos as a form of self-expression or art.

I mean, to each their own. BUT... I have a hard time with the term " Man" Bun. I may just be old
school, but that is not what Men wear for a Haircut/style. I figure, if you spend more than a couple of minutes looking at yourself in the mirror, getting yourself shaved, its too much. We call it a "Bitch Bun" around here. Not trying to offend anyone. Just my opinion, worth less than what you paid for it.
