Model 10 DOB request

Bought one of the NY department of corrections model 10's today at my LGS. Butter smooth trigger and it shoots great. Condition is not all that great as it has lots of holster wear, but for the price it is going to make an excellent woods knock around gun.

If someone would be kind enough to date it for me, that would be awesome.

Mine is a 10-8 AHU21** and a quick phone call to S&W & I was told it was made in 1985. yours is somewhere in that late 70's early 80's ballpark I'm guessing.

In 1983 S&W went with the 3 alpha serial prefix starting with AAA. So it would have to be 1983 or later. My guess is that ADU would a couple years into the new system. Mid 1980s is my guess.

Three alpha serials did not start on the Model 10 until about 1983. ADU doesn't show in the released (partial) lists, but ADT shows up in both 1983 and 1984. Most likely, yours was made in one of those two years.

In 1983 S&W went with the 3 alpha serial prefix starting with AAA.

Actually, AAA was used in 1980 and 1981, but it is likely all of those appeared on the then-new L frame revolvers. The transition to the new system on other models seems to have started in earnest in 1983.

It's a bull barrel version, so a 10-8...

Any ideas on how to get the "DC" medal off the side of the gun?

It depends on how it was attached, but I would leave it on for two reasons - the finish underneath will likely be damaged in removing it, and it is part of its history/service. A future collector would ask why you took it off!

Thanks and I understand your reasoning but I am 100% not a collector nor am I worried about value. So, I took it off with dental floss. Cleaned up the residue with Hoppes #9 and now it looks much better, at least to me.
