Hello, im going to look at a nickel plated model 10-5 with a 6 inch barrel. However, I have wanted a model 13 with a 4 inch barrel for quite some time. Should I go with the long model 10 or try to find a nice model 13. How does the accuracy and shootability of the 4 inch bull barrel compare to the 6 inch standard barrel.

Thank you,
Cains

The 6 inch will shoot a little more accurate, but IMHO not worlds better. Pick the one you want, they are virtually identical. If you want to be able to shoot magnums, you have 1 choice.

I have a model 13-4 that I really like.
It shoots as well as my 19-6 with a 4 inch barrel - out to @ 15-20 yds.

After that can't say, my eyes aren't as good as they once were....

What will the gun be used for? A 6" barrel is fine for the range, provides a nice sight radius. However, a 4" barrel will shoot just as well under most conditions and is easier to pack. How about a nickel 10-6 4" HB, like this one?

I think accuracy is kind of a wash here. Sounds like you'd prefer the 13 all other things being equal (which they never are) so maybe go with the better "deal" or as IAhunter says, get both!

Personally, I would go with the 13 over the 10. That being said, I own a 10-8, but not a 13. Nickel guns are not my thing. The finish can be prone to problems. I do prefer a 6" over a 4" for the range. Have a M&P from 1919, w/6" barrel. Good shooter, as is my 28, 6", as is my 586 4" etc. Basicly, you do have a lot of options. Don't rush yourself. A .357 can obviously shoot a wider range of ammo. Good luck on your hunt! Bob

No mention of use or where you live.

Like was said above, it depends on what you are going to do with it. A 4" or shorter barrel carrys better in a holster. Especially if you are carrying in a vehicle.
If you just shoot targets at a range the 6" should work out fine.
I currently have 3 K Frames. A 2-1/2" 66, a 4" 64, and a 4" 617. All are great revolvers, and handy to carry around. Each has a Lobo Enhanced Pancake Holster custom ordered to fit it.

I only own 2 revolvers with barrels over 4", and they are both 480 Ruger Super RedHawks that I hunt with. I do not have a holster for either. I carry them in a Case with shoulder strap.

As mentioned, this really comes down to what your intended use is.

The Model 10 in the 6" configuration is more of a range gun that can be used for defensive work; conversely, the Model 13 is a fighting gun that can be used for plinking. Both guns will somewhat outshine the other in their primary purposes.

Mechanical and cosmetic condition of each, and the asking prices, are unknowns thus far, and play a considerable role in decision making.

The shooting dynamics of each might be a wash. They're both K frames, and sporting the same grips will feel quite similar in the hand. And I'm not certain, but the heavy barrel of the 13 against the longer barrel of the 10 might yield a similar balance and weight distribution overall. For setting up target shots, the 10 will give you a longer sight radius; for close quarter defensive shooting, the shorter 13 will probably point more naturally.

It's not quite apples and oranges here, but it's nearing it.

Given that's you've wanted a 13 for quite some time, and it's a very versatile platform (from the range to the nightstand to the hip, and uses both .357 and .38), that might be your best bet.

They're a little harder to come by at the moment, and that seems to have brought up prices some, but with patience you can find one in good condition at a fair price. And keep your eyes peeled for a Model 65; it's the 13's stainless twin.

Alternately, don't rule out the heavy barreled Model 10s and 64s; if you don't need or desire .357 capability, these models are otherwise identical to the 13 and 65, are easier to find and generally at better prices.

So, it comes down to intended use: how will you use the gun?

I've owned a M10 and currently have the M13 4" and much prefer the 13. For me it shoots better, packs better and I have the option of using .357.

What kind of Model 10 did you have?

An M10 should be a lot cheaper and easier to find. If you like the 6" barrel the M10 is your only choice. However, for something you keep in a night stand, 6" may be just a little long.

In my area, M13s are scarce so I would jump on one if it came up. The M13 w/ a 3" barrel is all the rage now so expect to pay a hansome price for one of these.

If you want to do a lot of target shooting, you may want to look for an M14 or M15 with adjustable sights. If not, you may be best served wtih a 3" or 4" M10 over a comparable M13. The capability of the M13 to fire .38 Specials or .357 Magnums is highly touted, (and rightly so), but most people wind up shooting .38 Specials most of the time anyway, so just how important that versatility is as a practical matter is debatable.

A 6" model 10 & .38 spl rounds go together like peas & carrots ..... It is hard for me to believe anyone finds such a light, trim handgun hard to pack around. They shoot great, pack easily and hit what they're aimed at day in, day out with mundane regularity. Mine can hit pop cans as far as you can throw them. Fun, accurate & deadly! CB

In my opinion I enjoy my Model 13-1more than the 10 because with the 13 you can shoot different calibers 38 or 357.I also think that the 4" barrel is easier to carry.Just my 2 cents

Hello, I am going to look at that 6 inch model 10 and a 4 inch model 10 this friday. I think i might wait and buy a model 13, as I think it will fit my needs better.

Thank you,
Cains

The 6" model 10 is not that common. Dont think they were made after the run of 10-5, and never in heavy barrel AFAIK.

I'd say, get both.

Some good advice if I ever heard any:D:D

The model 13-1 (upper) with the Jordan trooper stocks came first. I bought it new in April 1978. The model 10-6
dates to 1975.
You really can't go wrong with either, but you'll do even better with both.
teesur.
