Model 10 question

If I were looking for a heavy barrel, 4" M10, P&R, what would be the most desirable engineering number, a -6, -7 or -8? I might imagine the -8. Also, what would a nice condition shooter go for? I presume +P ammo would work fine?

I would vote for 10-6 simply because that's what mine is. I can't imagine
7 or 8 being any better. Shoot +P+ if you want to. The model 10 can
handle any ammo.

The 10-6 was Boise PD issue back in the 70s (on the right)
The 10-5 was for plain cloths cops (on the left)

The heavy barrel variants started showing up with the 10-1 in the early 60's. 10-8 or lower for the pinned barrel. The Model 10 was never made with recessed cylinders, so you won't find that.

The 10-7 is a standard barrel. Realistically, you will most likely find a 10-6 or 10-8 at a decent price, as those were the most commonly seen variants, purchased in large numbers by police during the last glory decades of the revolver era.

Of those, you can still find heavily used police trade-ins in the mid- to upper 200s, with the price drifting up to maybe 400 as your cosmetic demands increase. For a really nice shooter, that would be max.

PS: The attached pics show a 1968 NYPD Model 10-6 for 300. That was a few years ago, but I still see comparable ones on GB regularly.

"Nice" condition is in the eye of the beholder. I think you could get one for between $350 and $400. Keep an eye out for police or security force trade-in. Can be rough cosmetically but usually carried a lot and shot only a little.

Domestic agency LEO trade ins are pretty much gone.

I’d be more concerned with condition than the engineering change.

You do realize there’s no such thing as a recessed Model 10? Only rimfires and magnums were recessed.

I once talked a coworker into buying an inexpensive used 10-6 as he and his wife's first handgun. At that time there were many police trade-ins for sale in the shops.

It was languishing at a local pawnshop and we went to buy it during lunch. When we shot it after work I was more than surprised at how accurate it was. I one-holed a cylinder full of 130gr fmj target loads at 7 yards rather easily and when I grinned and acted like I wanted to keep it he politely took it from me and started learning how to shoot it.

We talked the pawnshop down to $200 OTD for it, and this was several years ago, but less than 10.

will likely all be pinned. I have a 3" 10-8 HB and it is not pinned if that
is important to you. Any model 10 should be ok with +P ammo.

I know about the R in P&R. As stated I am just used to saying P&R

Pete, mine is a 10-6...you can see it again over in the unfired model 10 thread... I like the Heavy barrel. it is of course a pinned barrel version. not so sure about the police trade in's , but the price is tempting. I kind of got caught up in an auction here, and paid $450. all correct gun, and wrap and box....no books or tools...Butch
