i picked up 2 model 10s in the last few weeks both look new in the box.both came with boxes cleaning rod brush paper work boxes are in great shape both guns numbers start with a d i was wondering what year the d started and ended . wish i new how to post pics thanks

The D prefix serial numbers started in 1968, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

Sorry. Missed the second half of your question. In 1977, they reached 6 nines and began to use a numeric digit in front of the D. There may have been some overlap.
