I understand the 10mm never really became that popular, but I am wondering if there were only 151 of the model 1046s ever made, why wouldn't the value of a ANIB example be higher than only $950.00? Very good condition is valued at around $650.00 according to the SCSW 4th Edition. Are there any forum members who own one? Thanks for any insight.

SCSW hasn't watched prices on Gunbroker the last few years. There are a few Forum Members who own the rare Model 1046. I believe the prices are between 2K+/- to 3K+/- depending on condition. The topic pops up every so often.

I wish I had my model 1086 (10mm, DAO, 4.25" barrel) they made 1660 pistols. I really liked the 10mm cartridge and the beefy, stainless, DAO trigger for a duty gun. Things change and the 10mm wasn't in my future so I traded mine for the .45 version the model 4586.

True,20 years ago the 10mm platform never became popular. But there's a resurgence going on(with 41 magnum too). Ruger,Remington,EAA,Sig,and others now have 10mm models. The S&W M610 10mm revolvers are way up in value/price.

My 1086 isn't going anywhere. With 1660 made it will only go up in value no matter what the book says. Also, it is a great shooter and a good looker as well. Win/win.

I wish I held onto my 1086, I could ring a 16 inch plate at 100 yards with a 175 gr Winchester Silvertip. I've had my 4586 for 21 years, it's my desk gun in the den.

When I feel like being "practical", I view my fixed Novak sighted 1006 as the perfect storm of 10xx models.

It is my favorite of all six configurations (traditional DA/SA with the full 5-inch barrel) AND they made the most of them also, meaning that mine doesn't have some crazy "value" attached to it that prevents me from wanting to shoot it, add wear, etc etc.

I suppose I'm just saying that if I had to own one of the Sig-style decocker 10xx pistols or one of the DAO pistols because they were the most affordable and the 1006 model had only 151 produced, I'd be downright angry.

Heh, I like it better this way!

My thoughts also. I could probably never afford one of the rarer models, but I'm happy with my 1006. Even with the hated adjustable sights, which one forum member described as "the most hideous abomination ever vomited onto the slide of a S&W auto." But I happen to like them!

I don't know if it was me that said that (it doesn't sound quite like me...) but I agree with the sentiment. It wouldn't keep me from buying a 10xx but it would keep me from buying most other models if it wears that rear sight.

Still love the 2-3rd Gens anyway and there's plenty of room on this bandwagon for differing tastes! ;)

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I LOVE the S&W adjustable rear sight.
Until the debut of the Novak rear sight, the S&W "Big Ear" adjustable sight was the most "snag-resistant" rear sight available (look at it and the Novak in profile) and it had a great sight picture and was adjustable to boot.

Another thing to remember when tossing opinions, the man who designed that excellent sight, Dwayne Charron, is still alive and sometimes reads these posts.
If you don't recognize his name, you might recognize his work.
Along with many other models, Dwayne Charron designed the Model 52.

How's THAT for vomit?

John

Be kind.

Ummm, I thought his name was Dean? Either way, the internet has a way of promoting thicker skin if thin skin afflicts you.

The fantastic Model 52 gets a LOT of love in these pages, far more love than than hate that the rear sight will ever experience. Folks will continue to have opinions, I don't really see why anyone must take them personally.

I would think anyone who creates something where the market is so passionate would understand that some will love and some will hate, it comes with the territory when your work is discussed by people.

Nope. It's Dwayne.
He does have a son named Dean (not in the gun business).

I'm all for opinions.

I just wanted folks to hear the reasoned side of the story.

John

Should we begin a campaign for the guy who invented or executed the internal lock on post-2000 manufacture S&W revolvers? By volume-- far more energetic hate & loathing.

Odd but true (and useless) Team 3rd Gen fact of the day: Poor old TTSH grew up exactly half a mile (as the bird flies) from where Mr. Charron grew up. :) Small world. :D

No, absolutely none of his talent rubbed off on me. ;)

++++++++++

ETA: Still looking for a copy of his book. :D -ttsh

Dwayne's son, Dean still has copies of his father's book available.
That's where I got mine.

Son of a gun! :) That's great news! :D The website shut down long ago and I believe that Dean is now up in Vermont somewhere. Never thought to contact him directly for a copy since so few were printed. I figured they were all sold out. I keep scanning the web hoping for a used copy to pop up but none ever do. :o

Please PM me with Dean's contact info if you still have it... and thank you! :)

"Son of a Gun Designer" is how Dean refers to himself.

PM with contact info sent.

I have a 1086, 1006, 1076 and a mutant hybrid 1066 slide on a 1076 frame. It's safe to say I'm a fan.

I would still love a 1046, but not at the cost of three other 10mms.
