I picked up a model 13-2 today in a pawn shop. It is a round butt 3" bbl. blued gun. I had never seen one of these before, and it made a very neat revolver. The serial no. is 8D73348. Can anyone tell me when it was made ? It is pinned and recessed also. It had a set of ivory looking grips on it , but I don't believe they are real ivory. Is there a way to tell real ivory from fake. They look for all the world like the real stuff, but I find it hard to believe that they are real. On the inside they are stamped "Alexander's Guns, Inc." and an address of 2327 San Jacinto, Houston Texas . The gun is in excellent condition, and I got it so cheaply that it doesn't matter value wise. I am just curious. I would post pics, but I don't know how. Thanks for any help.

I read about this idea:
Remove grips. On the surface normally hidden try to gently press a hot needle into the grip. If it melts its a plastic. If it does not melt then it might possibly be ivory. I have never tried this...only read about it

I have a 13-2 s/n 8D74243 and estimate it to be 1981 . . . just before they eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed cylinders . . . and suspect yours is the same.

Thats a great pice on your gun. I have its shinier brother in a couple of model 65s. Some of my favorite to carry and shoot!

Very nice find, indeed! On a different note, Alexander's Guns on San Jacinto St. is where I bought my first Colt Python in about 1974. A regular 6" blued model that I still have today in pristine condition! No box or paperwork though.

My 13-2 3" non-pinned but has recessed cylinder, must be a transition with a 9D serial number

OP those dont look like Ivory, I believe they are stag. Some of the fake stuff looks cheesy but you look like you have some real bone there with nice bark. Dont dismiss this as just flashy, they can be tuff as nails and bark provides a strong purchase on the gun. Congrats a 13 three incher was my first hand gun when I turned 18.
If you're referring to the stags in post #7 they are not the ivory grips on the 13-2 just purchased by the OP. The picture was intended to temporarily satisfy our hunger for a picture of any 3" P&R Model 13-2 until the OP is able to post his . . . sorry for the confusion.

my pinned and recessed 13-1 is the plain regular old not pretty square butt 4" but still a terrific trigger, terrific shooter!
And yes, ivory smells like burning hair when heated.
