Model 13 problem

Hi All. I just came back from the range and had a little problem with my model 13. The tiny little pin on the ejector came loose. I was shooting just fine but after loading the cylinder I couldn't get it to close. I saw the little pin on the ejector looked bent. I was thinking I'd need to bend it back but it turned out it was loose. I pushed it back into place with ease and thought that's not right. I pushed it out and finished shooting without it. I did find out if it's to far back it will block the hand. My questions are just how important is this pin? How are they held in? Pressed in or maybe loc-tight? It is loose enough now I can push it all the way through with finger pressure. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Bill

I’d say lok tight it back in. If I could get a new one first I would.

It sounds like you think the pin goes on the extractor. It does not. It goes in the cylinder. You can loctite it in the cylinder for proper functioning.

Thank you. I should have known it went into the cylinder, I've cleaned that area many many times. It was stuck in the extractor when I found it and I didn't think beyond that. Thanks again Bill

I'd be a little leery of just using locktight. I'd prefer a mechanical solution.
If you can't get another one, I think I'd pinch a little dimple in the pin really close to the end (leave a tiny bit of the end UN-dimpled) with a pair of vice grip locking pliers. You could always try to use a punch instead, but with something this tiny the pliers would work better iMO.

For example: say the pin is 3/16" OAL. I'd make the dimple 1/32" from one end.
Insert the end near the dimple into cylinder and tap it lightly until it seats. You don't want to dimple it much - just enough to displace a little metal and give it a slightly oblong shape in one small spot. That will make it wedge into the hole so that it can't come out again.

Lock-tite will will work, but you have to get the pin and and the hole in the cylinder completely clean and free of oil. I agree with BC38, upsetting a tiny bit of metal on the end of the pin that goes into the cylinder should hold it just fine.

Thanks for all the ideas. This pin is tiny and I mean tiny. Since there are two of them I'm going to try it for a few range trips with just the one. After that I'll try your ideas. This small pin put it out of action which isn't good. Thanks again for all the help. Bill

As BC38 recommends but that is tough on such a small pin without launching it. Take it apart, clean and use green Loctite sleeve retainer. One small drop will do. Remove excess.

I have just two Smith revolvers left. My 10-7 has the two pins. My 640-1 does not. Looking at the Model 10 I can't see what function if any those tiny pins serve.

Anyone know when they stopped using them?

The teeny tiny pin or pins purpose is to properly align the cylinder and the extractor star. (Seems to me, anyway.)
Just for the record, ALL the S&W revolvers I have (some without model numbers) have not one but two of those itty-bitty pins installed.
I do not know when such was ended but the latest made revolver I have is a model 581 when they first came out (AAA --- serial number). It has a non pinned barrel but two pins in the cylinder - extractor arrangement.

Any one have a later manufactured sample?

Yes they are press fit. They aren’t needed with the new design extractor star which is self aligning.

You can get replacements from Jack First and in two diameters. Mike the one you have and suggest using a brass punch to install with appropriate Loctite. My Pre 29 was missing both pins and the larger diameter fit best. I learned about this from a previous posting.
