Model 14-1 stuck ejector

Hi All,

I inherited my dad's Model 14-1 8 3/8" SN K4704xx. SAO, but I always wondered if this was from the factory or a modification? Pulling the trigger rotates the cylinder with a slight hammer retraction. Shoots like butter. I shot it recently and had a lot of trouble opening the cylinder. It seems like the front of the ejector rod is hanging up on the plunger but everything else seems to be working properly. Any ideas? I took Glock and M-16 armorer courses (for work) and I'm pretty good with tools but I'm far from a gunsmith, and no experience with revolvers.

The rod likely needs tightened - left hand threads.

Sounds that the ejector rod may be slightly unscrewed. Remove the cylinder, put some fired cases in it to hold the ejector star in place and gently tighten the rod. Look for instructions on youtube.

Yes, there were model 14s SAO. S&W sold factory parts kits for that and may also have assembled some like this from factory. They are famed great shooters. I do not have one, wish I had.

Awesome and thank you all. I did notice that the ejector rod spun so I tried it a little this way and that but didn't want to mess with it too much. Spun it left hand and it retracted a good 1/8" and now is fine. I know there were kits for SAO but was wondering if there was a way to tell factory from parts kits, or if that even matters. I'll do some homework. And I was incorrect, the hammer drops a little when the trigger is pulled to rotate the cylinder - I had said it retracts a bit.

A letter is the only way to be certain. Be sure to ask about the SAO in your request.

That's a beauty. Mine has tens of thousands of rounds through it but it sure shoots nice.

Today must have been M14 day, I fired 50 rounds Cowboy loads with my Model 14-3. The cylinder started to jam and cases stuck , did a quick clean up with CLP and got it working again.

Good idea, Jack, My SAO is on my list of those to letter after the moratorium is lifted...Since the OP is a S&WHF member, he may also be able to ask Roy in the private forum, although that might also require membership in SWCA...I'm unsure on that last point......Ben

A matter of Nomenclature: Revolvers have extractors, not ejectors!! This is not a small distinction!! The fact that many use the incorrect term makes no difference, just that many are wrong.

Agreed. I always (I think) write "extractor rod." The confusion for many comes from the fact that the revolvers are called "hand ejectors," a distinction from the top break guns that had automatic ejection. But that term describes a function, not the part name. The part that actually ejects the cartridge is an extractor (the star); the rod moves the extractor, hence an extractor rod.

Personally, I don't make a big deal out of it. People know what is meant. But in terms that are accurate, you are correct. It is sort of like saying "pistol" when referring to a revolver. It grates on the ear a bit, but I won't usually comment on it.
