Model 14-2 value

I was looking for some guidance on valuing a .38 special I inherited: Model 14-2 SN K825xxx. My research suggests $525 - $600, but I wanted to make sure I was not overlooking something.

Greetings...Nice looking K38 Masterpiece. It has a nice pair of aftermarket combat grips. I would say your in the ball park for value in Nor Cal. Other parts of the country can be slightly lower. Box and tools would increase its value too.
You should really enjoy this popular model.

Six years ago, I bought a Model 14-2 in 95% or better condition with original Magna stocks, the box, documents and tools. I paid $550 OTD. I considered it a good deal at the time. With inflation, I suspect your suggested price is in the ballpark.

There is a pair of them at the LGS for $650 each. Both have plastic after market target grips and aren't quite as nice as yours.

Nice, and I would pay $550 for it, maybe a little more with the correct stocks. I see them priced higher though, usually at gun shows, sometimes to $800+ but don't know if anybody actually buys at that price. Enjoy.

Welcome to the FORUM! Your 14, is sure a nice looking 1 to say the least. They sure shoot quite well also. I have a -3 (1977). Your gun came with magna stocks or targets. Diamond stocks were phased out around 1968. My -3 wears targets. Bob

At Thanksgiving last year was home visiting parents. Went to local shop and found that model for $425 no tax since being shipped to my dealer out of state. No box or tools. Condition close to same. Considered that a great deal since the ones on GB at the time were $550 up. If you are not a purist collector and like those grips I call the Hogues a bonus. I paid $100ish for a really nice set of Hogues for mine and put the Magnas in my grip box. My opinion better than OK deal. Now go fall in love with target wadcutter loads and have some fun. I know that i have. I'd forgotten how much fun plinking w 38 Special target loads was.

A buddy that I shoot with bought a mechanically perfect but refinished M19 about the same time. We put a clay pigeon on the berm and take turns. 1st guy breaks it then we start breaking pieces. 1st guy to miss buys the after shooting cold drink. We forget how much fun something like that can be.

I'd say you were close. I paid $459 for my 14-3 last year.

I'd say the price quoted is pretty fair... not a screaming deal with after market grips, but fair. By comparison, I paid $380 delivered for a Model 14-3 a little over a year ago, but it had significant blue loss on barrel and cylinder and was wearing a pair of Pachmayr grips. The demand for nice examples of S&W revolvers of that age range is moving up quickly, so if I needed another K-38, I'd certainly consider buying it, maybe making a low-ball offer of $500 on general principles.
