Model 14-4 8inch... need advice

I found a pretty good deal on a Model 14-4 8 3/8 inch barrel in Like new condition.

I REALLY, REALLY don't need another handgun, but I'm having a hard time passing it up.

Do the longer barrelled guns help improve shooting skills?

I've got a Model 18 in 6 inch that I enjoy, and was just wondering if the longer barrelled 14 has a place in competition shooting?

I use a 8" model 14 for centerfire bullseye, but not everyone can hold the extra wieght out front comfortably.
