Model 14-4 firing pin wobble

I am able to slightly wiggle the firing pin on the hammer of my 14-4. It does not effect the firing of the rounds. Is this normal?

FIRING PIN WOBBLE

AS LONG AS THE WOBBLE IS UP AND DOWN AND NOT SIDEWAYS IT IS NORMAL, AS IT HAS THE WOBBLE TO ALOW THE PIN TO LINE ITSELF IN THE FIRING PIN BUSHING.

Mkk1 and ronnie are absolutely correct.
The hammer mounted firing pin (S&W calls it a hammer nose) is attached by a rivet and pivots by design. Some models actually have a small spring behind the hammer nose that controls the positioning. The bushing that the firing pin passes thru (hammer nose bushing) is stationary and closely sized to prevent primer flow and escaping gas in case of a pierced primer. Since the hammer swings an arc, the hammer nose needs to pivot so it can pass thru the bushing. I purchased a M1917 cheap at auction because the hammer nose was locked up with dried grease, which effectively seized the action. A little cleaning and it worked perfectly!

I also have a M14-4 with the "floating" hammer nose. The nose tip has broken off, so I ordered a nose from S&W. The one they sent me is quite a bit different than the original now-broken nose, and will not fit on my hammer. The SKU for the S&W part is 21239. My understanding is that this new nose has a spring behind it as well, whereas the original nose did not have a spring.

What part should I be asking S&W for? Anyone else have a proper hammer nose for my M14-4?

You might want to put a WTB ad up, I expect someone here has what you need. Otherwise, a quick check of Numrich shows that the hammer nose is out of stock, but they do have hammer assemblies available.

ETA they do have the SS. post-1988 hammer nose available for less that $6, might be worth a try.

And yes, they DO float . . . and the gun goes bang every time if the part is in good shape!
