Model 14 Repair

I recently bought a 4 screw model 14 at a very good price. It passed my initial checkout at the dealer (timing, shakes, etc.) but it soon developed a forceful trigger return in single action. Upon disassembly, there are all the classic signs of someone messing with the action to lighten the single action trigger pull. The rebound spring is cut and both the hammer and the trigger have been messed with. From my reading I understand that these items are not repairable and should be replaced. I would like advice on where to purchase these parts and is this a job I can do myself?

The trigger and hammer are considered fitted parts, but I have had a few that just dropped in and worked, I have had others that required minor fitting. There is a good deal of luck involved, you might get lucky and find that a replacement trigger and hammer will just drop in and work, but I would not bet on it.

Define 'messing with'...rebound springs are a dime a dozen and an old trick for LE guns used to be to replace the standard rebound spring with one from a K38 Single Action...still a full 17 coils but lighter so you get a full but not as jarring rebound.

If someone has stoned completely through the case hardening on the hammer / trigger they may need replacement, or if the SA notch is clabbered up, but if you have a slight case of push-off that can sometimes be handled with a barret file...it all depends.

The rebound spring has been cut to 14 coils. The hammer appears to have been stoned, and shows a bright and uneven (not square) polish on the cocking notch. The trigger sear area also appears to have been stoned. When I cock the revolver and pull the trigger, the trigger is very forcefully pushed forward. The rebound spring is easily obtained. Where would I get a model 14 no dash hammer and trigger? Are they still available from S&W?

I have had great luck with WTB ads here.
All K frames from late 50's till they started MIM in late 90's were they same.
If you do not need or want full target .500 wide they should be quite inexpensive and if you get a matched set from someone who upgraded to
Target they will likely fit.
Midway and Brownell's both seem to be out so you would have to check for used or with Smith themselves.
Or just Google as there are lots of small suppliers of parts on internet.

The Rebound & Main Springs are available just about anywhere, and you can try Poppert's or Jack First for the Hammer & Trigger. About 60% of the time the parts will fit with little or no fitting required. Minor fitting is usually easily accomplished assuming you understand the workings and the relationship of the parts.
