Any suggestions on what type of holster works best for extended carry for a 15-3 or a 19-4? Outside the waist on belt.

Also any opinions on the most enjoyable 38 special rounds for both models?

Sorry have to admit for the 15-3 Adam-12 had a slight influence.

The 19 in a stubby is fantastic, looks great!

Just pull up a barrel of ammo and spend 4 hours at the range :-)

Thanks for any input upfront.

You ask for ammo suggestions so here goes my $.02 worth.

I've always thought the original performance (bullet weight & velocity) of the 38 S&W Special was a good all around load for K-frames. This was not the watered down load we have today but a full powered 38. It suffered from the then common round nose lead bullet but other wise it was a good round.

Original performance was a 158g projectile at 850-870 fps, depending on barrel length. The higher velocity was what you could expect from a 6" barrel and the lower was about what you'd get from a 4".

This is now considered +P performance but was the norm before about 1975. Dig up some old reloading manuals and you will see loads like 3.7g of Bullseye behind a 158 giving this level of performance.

I knew an old cop who was still carrying his M-14 in a swivel holster who bought 1000 round cases of that very reload. He went through one about every month. He never wore out his K-frame shooting it, although he admitted he needed to have the hand and bolt looked at every year or so. He was lightning fast in double action and seldom missed what he was shooting at.

Switch from the old RNL bullet to a nice flat pointed SWC and you have a perfect all around load for any 38 Special and for Magnums when you're tired of the blast and recoil. (smile)

Leather. And there are a zillion good makers out there. My personal preference for OWB leather includes a thumb break or similar top strap. Plus you need a strong leather belt for support. You can wear that combination all day long.

Dave T has a good answer but I will add that for practice any plain range round similar to Federal range ammo should be fine; a little stout in the .38 but a *****cat in the .357.

Re: Leather. For OTW holster ... look at Bianchi 111 Cyclone which is a very nice cross-draw that can be worn strong side. Very comfortable. Also look at the Tom Three Persons holster by El-Paso Saddlery. Excellent in every way. You can get it done up just about any way you want it. HTH. Sincerely. bruce.
