Good evening folks, recently picked up a 19-4 s/n 87K2xxx, looks to be unfired. Came with all the docs and box, can’t confirm it’s the original box with only one label still attached, but was told it was the original. Some very LIGHT surface rust spots present on the rear sight and a couple other places, and tiny pitting spot(pinhole size) behind the top right grip, but other than that, almost 100%. Question, can anyone estimate the birthdate? Also, any recommendations on grips for this? If I decide to keep this, would prefer the 3-finger grips for better control, felt the VZ grips weren’t “proper” for this beauty. Not looking to spend an arm and a leg either. Honestly, this wasn’t really on my radar, still in search for a 686-4 7-shot snubnose, hoping can shake one loose from one of the members here. I may offer this up for trade in the classifieds, definitely not looking to sell. I just wanted to show n tell, open to any advice/input from the good folks here. Thanks in advance.

Thank you sir! Currently searching for 3-finger grips, preferably rubber grips. Almost tempted to just keep this, but that 686-4 7-shot snubnose keeps calling me.

Without looking at my SCSW I'd say 1979-1980.

I've got your snubby's older sister, a minty nickel Model 19-4 (33K1035) from 1978. It's a great shooter, but it does have some "punch" with the original stocks. If you want some nice combat stocks, check out the Altamont website. They have quite a selection of wood stocks that are reasonably priced. I don't shoot this much, I prefer my 3" Model 686-6 Plus. However, if I were you I'd keep the 19-4 and enjoy it!

Oh that nickel sure is purdy! I appreciate everyone’s input thus far…I may have to just break-in this 45yr old piece and keep her, especially with news of S&W releasing wheelguns w/o the ils. Hoping the new 686+ will be out sooner than later…
