Model 16-3 K-32

Looking at pictures of the beautiful Model 16-3 being offered as first prize in the S&W Historical Foundation Sweepstakes, I noticed that the "6" in the model number inside the crane has been stamped over a "4". My own 16-3 is overstamped the same way (see pictures), and in fact every 16-3 I have seen has been overstamped this way. Also, every 16-3 box I have seen has been a 14-3 box with a 16-3 label pasted over the end. Makes me wonder how many 16-3's were shipped this way? Maybe all of them?

Hard to believe nowadays, but the K-32/Model 16 was never very popular during it's regular production years (only 3630 produced 1947-74). My theory is that by the time the -3 production change came along, demand was so low that the factory didn't even bother to stamp dedicated 16-3 frames. When an order did come in for a 16-3, they would just overstamp a 14-3 frame, assemble the gun and ship it.

What do you think? Anybody got a 16-3 that's NOT overstamped?

Since many folks here share my interest in K-32's and Model 16's, surely someone can provide some insight on this (or at least some speculation)

Most folks may be like me. I have never seen a K-32 in real life. I owned 22s and 38s like it but never a model 16.

When I grow up and get rich and famous, maybe I'll be able to find and buy a K-32, but in the meanwhile I have to get my experience vicariously by reading threads like this one.

i believe most, if not all, of the 16-3's were overstamped Model 14-3 frames

I'm looking at a 16-3 that is an overstamp from model 14. It's box is marked model 16 in silver ink on one end and also has the usual label on the other end. There is no underlying label.

M16-3 SN 3K3261x has a 14-3 frame, overstamped with a 6. Came without box so can't help on the box configuration.
BTW. Prices seem to be going up on the K32's, almost $3000 for a pre model!
